Hello there, thanks for your reply, but i can't even get into the bios. Everything is blocked out, just padlock requiring password after a minute or so. Would your solution still work?

    Regards,

    Kristian.

Hi there

When you get time again to try and solve this problem, turn on the laptop, and immedietely it should say which button to press the enter setup. This will be on the very first screen as the laptop starts up. It is usually F2 or Delete.

Press the appropriate button to enter the Setup utility (also known as the BIOS), and then press F10 to save the current settings. Restart the laptop and the error should be gone.

Best regards

    Thank you for your reply.

It seems your computer is now password protected at the system-level. Afraid the only real way around this is to have it serviced at a local repair store or by the manufacturer if under warranty. Laptops make it more difficult to reset the BIOS password than a desktop due to the location of the mechanisms.

Hope you get it resolved soon!

    Warmest regards

Hi,

The problem you're having is a two part problem, first the battery which keeps the clock has either failed or been left off power too long and run out of charge. Second the password it's asking for is the BIOS password which has nothing to do with any windows password you may have.

Try entering nothing at all, just press enter or click ok if the mouse is enabled. That should get you through to the BIOS menu where you can set the time and date. I will take a quick dig through the manual in case there is a default password that you need. If someone has actually set a BIOS password and you don't know it it will have to be taken to an IBM repair center as they will not share the technique for reseting this. They do so to prevent theft.

So, give it a try, I'll double check your manual in the mean time, let me know how you make out.

Still digging but there seems to be a lot of variation in that series.

When you look at the tag on the bottom of the laptop, it will say 2374-XXX can you reply back with the last three digits so I can grab the proper model guide for your exact model information.

I suspect the new error actually is a result of having the wrong password which, as I mentioned earlier may be the result of someone programming a password at some point.

I'll get back to you soon,

    Chris

Unlock password

It seems to have a password set for that hard disk. Try using another hard disk. If you have the same issue, then there is some sort of password set in the BIOS.

My ibm displays a key on the screen, what can I do to unlock the key.

This key is a Power on Password, it is required to allow the laptop to boot up. This is used to prevent unauthorized access to the laptop.
Removing the BIOS battery will not remove this password because the password is stored on an EEPROM chip.
This WEB site may help remove this password.

Removing CMOS battery on ibm r50e is not solving the pass problem

Removing battery or resetting BIOS with jumper will not help. You should call IBM for support on this issue. All thinkpads have a three year warranty, with either return to base or on-site service. Since the R50e is a recent model, you should have no problem getting it serviced directly by IBM. Toll Free: 1-800-IBM-SERV (1-800-426-7378)

I CANNOT BOOT MY IBM THINKPAD 2367..HELP

Both errors are related to the backup battery which is located under the main battery. It is probably dead. You can get one on eBay for $3.29 w/free shipping or pay a shop $20 to put one in. If you do it yourself be very gentle plugging it into the tricky little slot - it is possible to break the connector loose from the motherboard but it is an easy repair if you have patience and dexterity. As for the password, try just hitting enter. It is the supervisor password to change the BIOS settings and was probably never set.
Hope this helps.
