Question about Samsung SyncMaster 172B (Silver) 17 inch LCD Monitor

Open Question

No picture viewing on my SycnMaster 172B at all. HELP !

Dear all experts,

I have a really strange problem with my LCD monitor. I'd appreciate if someone help me, cause I'm in a big trouble.

OK the problem is kind of complicated, so I've bought "Samsung SyncMaster 172B 17" for a long time ago (about 4 years). It was working fine until a couple months ago it starts to lost the whole picture at one time with making a strange lines and it look like a galaxy or something. So, I noticed if i leave it on for a couple hours it will be fixed by itself. BUT later the problem became worst than that and could not be fixed by itself at all.

So, please please dear all experts I really NEED your half as soon as possible. And the worst part is that I cant find it nowadays in all markets.

Thanks in advance,

I would follow the self-test below. If you see the same issue in the test screen then your monitor has lost it's sync and would need a board replaced.

If it dosn't appear during the test, then you might want to test it on another PC.

Self-Test Feature Check
1. Turn off both your computer and the monitor.
2. Unplug the video cable from the back of the computer.
3. Turn on the monitor.
If the monitor is functioning properly, you will see a box in the illustration below.

This box appears during normal operation if the video cable becomes disconnected or damaged.
4. Turn off your monitor and reconnect the video cable; then turn on both your computer and the monitor.

If your monitor screen remains blank after using the previous procedure, check your video controller and computer system; your monitor is functioning properly.

Follow the instruction below to solve your problem:
Restart your computer and enter Safe Mode (press F8 right as the computer starts booting up. Choose Safe Mode in the menu, press Enter twice).

While in Safe Mode, open Control Panel and go to Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features on Vista/7) and uninstall the display driver software/drivers.

Restart your computer and boot normally. Now you should be able to see everything. Things might look bigger and uglier, that because there's no display driver installed. All you have to do now is reinstall the display driver. Use it's original disc or go to the manufacturer website and download the latest driver.

Good luck!

SOURCE: Samsung Syncmaster LCd monitor hissing standbye

The hissing sound is coming from the power supply board. It is not dangerous per say but it indicates the power supply is failing and you will begin to have more problems such as wavy picture, slow to display the picture and then finally no picture at all. We have repair guides posted on our web site at: for several Samsung monitors and a repair kit is available for this model at: You should be able to repair your monitor if you can do a little soldering. With this I would normally tell you that you have a dead pixel and you need to return the monitor to the supplier. But it is very strange that the line moves.

Audio comes directly to multimedia LCDs and has nothing to do with display.
Usually, the capacitors are the casue of such blackouts. So, it is recommended that you check the capacitors/ other components such as invertor board and CCFL (lamp), which may be failing or heating up.

Hope it helps! Good Luck!

Hi!! I have a Westinghouse L1916HW 19" DVI LCD 2ms

One possibility is that it may have dying power supply which may be putting out unstable DC which can cause a lot of strange symptoms.
See pictures here:

Bad caps are real common problems in all brands of the monitors as you can see in my albums.
Westinghouse monitors are cheaply made to start with.

More likely to be bad caps.
If you are going to DIY and already try the monitor with another PC, and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed SAMSUNG monitors to get some ideas what to look for:

Strange Display Issue

Although it could be a monitor problem, try deleting it from the Device Manager list under Monitor.
Then reboot your PC and if you are lucky, Windows will find it and reinstall the necessary driver.
Considering that it is an LCD, there aren't many ways it can cause that kind of display.
