Can't defragment the C portion of the disc

The laptop is a bit old, it's a Vaio model PCG-983L & like most Sony PC's the disc is partitioned. I have no trouble in defragmenting the D portion but the C just will not do it.

The C portion of the partitioned hard drive has 391 MB of free space left, out of an original 6 GB allocation.

How many % free space do you have with the drive C?

On some systems it will allow you to defragment with lower than 15% of your hard drive, but sometimes some programs refuse to defragment if it is lower than that. I suggest trying to free up at least 900 MB in the drive and try defraging.

Since your C must be having windows system files and hence it can't be defragmented properly.

And if its not having windows then surely your C is having some faults.

Umountable _boot_volume when trying to start my Sony Vaio Notebook model PCG-691L

This usually means that you have a corrupt file and the solution is to reinstall your system to factory if you have a recovery disc you can try using that first. If not then there should be a recovery partition where you can reinstall though you will loose everything pictures documents etc.

Where can I download the factory recovery discs for my Sony Vaio PCG-U3?

Sadly, you'll likely need to call Sony and order a set. It usually isn't too expensive, but there are just so many laptop models out there that I don't believe there is any online database with them.

1st hard drive is full. i don't know how to make

You only actually only have ONE drive in a laptop, you may however have TWO partitions, you simply have to remove what you don't need, transfer stuff over to the "Other" partition, run disk cleanup and compress drive to get space, & defragment. remove whatever you don't use or need. OR get a USB Hard drive and transfer them there.

Slow performance

System resources at 75% on idle only gives you 25% to work your notebook. Sony VAIO PCG-K25 Laptop 2.8 GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM should be plenty to run most OS and programs. The OS, software and accessories attached to your laptop are utilizing 75% of your resources on startup. You may want to do some maintenance, check your processes on startup & carefully remove any not being used, check your networking usage, good antivirus & spyware cleaning, clean & defrag your hard drive, remove some of your files & programs, and upgrade your memory.
