Drive dosen't stay connected

My External SimpleDrive 500GB Drive doesn't stay connected for longer then 3 minutes.

I did manage to get a "quick format" done, under my format options, but that has not solved the problem. I have even switched out the Power and USB cables, with my second one to see if that was where the problem was. with the simple solutions not working I'm not sure what to do now, apart from spending money i don't have to get it looked at. :(

Good day sir, hi, It looks to me that your simple drive is giving up on you. Im assuming that the correct device driver is loaded properly.
There are two major part that you may try to test, the interface board and the hard drive. Hopefully the interface board is the cuplrit.
Have you tried in on another PC, you can also remove the hard drive, and place it on another computer. If done properly, you can get your files stored in it. then buy an aftermarket USB hard drive enclosure (without the hard drive). to replace the simpletech enclosure.

You may have a power supply that is defective or is failing. Try another power supply, 12V, 2A, center pin positive.

If you have a SimpleTech SimpleDrive connected to your computer and you're experiencing problems with the external hard drive, there may be several reasons why it's malfunctioning. Troubleshooting your computer can help rule out common problems and the possibility that the hard drive may be defective. If you recently purchased the device and suspect there is something wrong with it, return the defective drive to SimpleTech or the reseller for a replacement. Incompatible USB Port Problems SimpleTech SimpleDrive plug and play options makes it easy for you to connect the device to your computer. Cannot copy more than 4gb file on a 500gb external usb hard disk


You have to change your hard drive from FAT32 to NTFS,because FAT32 limits the size of transferred files to 4GB. To do so ,go to Start,right click on Computer and select Manage. Under Storage click on Management.Find your hard drive in the list and right click on it and select Format. Under File System change the Answer to NTFS and leave the Allocation Unit to default. Click on Perform Quick Format if you want.click OK and confirm your OK with losing all data on the drive,and your done.

The light is white..The computer doesn't seem to


I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most portable / external hard drives (though not always)

You may want to skip the format section lower down

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again.

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues carry on reading.

Go to your control panel and then administrative tools, select Computer Management.
Now select Disk Management and expand the window.
Your drive should be listed here, if not then you need to check your computer hardware has not got any issues before proceeding.
If your drive is listed and says healthy then right click on it an select Properties, click Tools and then Error Checking, Check now, tick the two boxes and then Start.
This will attempt to fix most minor / common errors on the drive. It may also ask you to restart which is fine. Allow it to finish its work or you could corrupt the drive. If all went well you should be able to use it normally again.
If you drive was listed but did NOT say healthy then right click and select Format. Choose NTFS as the file system and do not tick any boxes you do NOT want quick format. Again start and let it do its thing. When it is done restart your computer and you should be good to go.
If you still have problems with the drive you might want to look at other areas.

External hard drive problem NEED HELP


Is this a new external with no data on it? If it is, it may need to be formatted.Go to disk management to see if the drive is there. It may need to be initialize first before you can formatted.If it has not been initialized, a message will pop up for you to initialized it. Once it is done, formatted--This should be done only if don't have any data on it.

My SimpleDrive 500GB external hard drive is now only recognized as "USB Mass Storage Device" that I cannot access. I have uninstalled the driver and scanned for the hardware and it reinstalls it as USB...


You can try:
  1. another USB cable
  2. try it on another computer
That will rule out the USB and any software/driver issues on your computer. If it doesnt work after that, there could be a problem with the drive itself

General questions regarding simpletech simpledrive.


You probably have to initialize and/or format the drive.

Right click my computer and click Manage (assuming windows xp)

Go to disk management

See if you see the drive listed somewhere there. Should show approximately 950gb disk drive

If so right click that drive listed and choose either format, or create partition.

If you create the parttiion, make sure to click quick format, otherwise it will take a long time.

SimpleDrive external USB Disk Drive


You may not see any icon on desktop but should see "found new hardware" at the bottom right by the time. Right click My Computer and click Manage. Under Storage click Disk Management. You should find your drive here. If its a new drive, no letter may be assigned or it may not be partitioned or formatted yet. Right click on the drive to format it and to assign a drive letter. If its already formatted and works on other computers, let me know because it could be a USB error or faulty cable.
