Question about General Electric Cafe CSCP5UGXSS Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

My GE Cafe refer with Culligan water filter has stopped producing water. I removed the filter and replaced with the "dummy" plug. The filter was filled with clear, gelatinous slime and more gel-slime dripped from the source tube, but still no water. But even without the filter and just the plug installed, I get no water. When I first installed the plug, I got about 4 glasses of water, but now it's not producing water at all. Oddly, the ice maker is still making ice.

There is either a frozen block or a sludge block in the line to or from icemaker. Otherwise pump/valve may be faulty

Culligan water filter is leaking

Turn off water
Remove filter and seal ring.
Look at mating surfaces.
Usually the cast metal has eroded away.
If it is the sealing ring , replace it. If it is the casting , replace the whole thing. Other brands may be an option.

No dispensing water...GE refrigerator

There may be an interlock switch on the housing where the filter or dummy stopper is inserted. If this interlock is not satisfied, then the water dispenser won't turn on. This would prevent water from spraying all over the inside of the refrigerator if the filter is not seated properly. Check to make sure the filter or plug is inserted properly.

To unscrew big blue culligan water filter cover is it clockwise or counterclockwise, (

The Culliagan manual does not specify clockwise/counterclockwise, but what that means is its
implied to be counterclockwise. If you're using the "Big Blue HD-950" filter housing, then
you'll also want the Culligan SW-3 Filter Housing Wrench. But a HUGE pair of Channellock pliers
would also work (while leaving behind a few teeth marks in the plastic housing).

How do you know if you need to replace the RO membrane filter in the culligan good water machine

A TDS (total dissolved solids)meter is needed to test the Reverse Osmosis water and compare it to the feed water to determine how much TDS is being removed. Reverse osmosis membranes are designed to remove 80-95% of the TDS in your water supply.

For example: If your water has 500ppm of TDS the minimum TDS removal should be 400ppm leaving 100ppm. If the TDS from the Reverse Osmosis System drops to these levels it is time to change the Membrane.
Typically an RO system will consistently remove 90+% of TDS for many years. The normal lifespan for a membrane can be anywhere from 3-10 years. It all depends on the TDS of your water and your water usage. The higher the TDS the more frequently the membrane needs replacing. The other filters should be replaced every 6 months to keep the quality up and protect the membrane.
A TDS of 1000ppm compared to 100ppm is much more difficult remove to acceptable levels. I like to compare 1000TDS to taking muddy water, forcing it through a filter and getting drinking water. Where 100TDS may be more like a clear glass of water. Consequently a reverse osmosis system on high TDS will be less efficient, less gallons produced and filters will need to be changed more frequently to keep the quality and quantity up.

Red valve has a slow leek

If you are referring to the pressure relief button then this can be repaired. Turn off the water on inlet and outlet, take the housing off and remove filter. There is a small washer under relief button that can be replaced. Unscrew the button from inside of head to repair.

Culligan Gold series softnerdrain line runs constantly in street.

The main piston/sealpack is frozen up and needs to be replaced. There is a retrofit kit available from Culligan to repair this issue. The reason it stops when bypassed is the water is shutoff to unit.

Changed r/o 3 filters and now water produces 2cups

The pressure on an EMPTY tank should be 8-10 psi. Be sure the tank is empty before checking the pressure. A good way to empty the tank is to connect a small air compressor to the air valve on the tank, open the systems faucet, and turn on the compressor. A bicycle pump works too....Just more of a workout:)

Getting discharge water at all times

The valve is stuck in regeneration. If a Culligan unit the main piston / sealpack is jammed and may need to be replaced. Bypass the unit to stop discharge. You can get a retrofit kit from Culligan that is designed to repair this issue.

Culligan RO sstem has recently stopped producing more that 6 oz

This might be a possible tank pressure issue. This could also be a clogged filter. I would first check the tank pressure by using the following steps

Necessary Supplies:
1) Tire Gauge marked in 5psi increments (ie 5, 10, 15, 20psi, etc.)
2) Bicycle tire pump for standard type bike tire valve

To recharge RO System Tank:

1) Close cold water feed valve (valve located at some point along the cold water line from street plumbing).*
2) Leaving RO tank valve on, turn tank on side & locate valve stem on bottom side.
3) Remove stem cap.
4) Drain all water out of tank through open RO faucet into sink. (Continue to leave RO faucet open throughout procedure)
5) If current tank pressure is insufficient to empty tank, apply tire pump to valve stem and pump 10 – 15 times. Exit flow will increase and then gradually decrease as pressure equalizes. Do not overcharge internal bladder of tank during this procedure.
6) Repeat step #4 until tank is completely empty. (Tank is empty when additional pumping produces no more water)
7) At this point, adjust EMPTY tank to exactly 7psi. (Gauge reading midway between 5 & 10psi is sufficient)
8) Turn off RO faucet.
9) Replace cap on valve stem and reposition tank in upright position.
10) Open cold water feed valve.*
11) System water is useable immediately, however, tank will take 3-4 hrs to completely refill.
