-   I have a 930....brand new.....'x of death'.....have tried reset, have not reformatted. If unit is brand new, is it really necessary to back up. I have put nothing on it except the download software (which it obviously does not see) from ttHome
-   I have the same problem, bought my unit yesterday, installed the software, connected the unit to the computer, did a backup and then the update and now it doesn't work.
I tried the restore but it will not work.
Suggestions to solve the problem please.
Thanks -   tt720
Hi, I am back, just got the problem solved, I called their tech support at no charge (866-486-6866, Glen) , really good service.
First turn your firewall off (if you have one). You need to go into your 720 with the TomTom Home software and erase the downloaded software (with the remove items from my device) and reset the device (little reset button under the unit keep it pressed for 5 seconds), place it back in the cradle and restart your computer and than restart the 720 , bring the TomTom Home program up, and when the TomTom Home software in your computer restarts and detects the 720 it will tell you that you need to update the application, if it doesn't than you force the update by going to the add maps option, select items on my computer, select applications and press the add button, when done, go back and to device (option in top of your screen) and select disconnect device, restart your 720 and it should be back to life with the upgraded software.
Hope this helps
Aldo
If i did not make a backup (like an idiot) before trying to do the update.. Any chance of re-programming it or something.. All is lost..

I had the same problem, I have just received my new TomTom Go 720, done updates and.....white cross on red circle flashing with the next start up.
I have spent the whole Saturday evening and the whole Sunday trying to fix the problem. I went through every post on different forums and tried different thins including: formating device, reseting it, coping files, pasting files, dozen of installations using old and new version of Home Software. I have done literally everything I could following other people advises. Nothing worked. All I managed to do was to get to the stage where red circle does not appear anymore but it got stuck with on the start up showing me either black screen with TomTom on it or the screen with the crossroads.
Sometimes It let me chose what map I want to use but after that it rested itself continuously.
But finally I have solved my problem and my device is working as it was originally.
I need to underline that I have done backup before I downloaded updates BUT after restoring that backup using HOME2 it did not help.
What I have done is very simple. I went to the folder where my backup is kept and copied and pasted all the files from there onto my device.
it worked!!! Something tells me it could be also something to do with the map i updated as after i done some fixes it let me chose the map but did not go any further. This was the first time when I pasted previous map and it worked instantly.
I personally think it is the connector pins that is the problem......as if I push it onto its cradle...

I personally think it is the connector pins that is the problem......as if I push it onto its cradle and tape it up it charges a little.....I am going to try and hard wire it and see if it makes a difference.
