The automatic lens cover does not retract (specifically the top half of the cover). The camera was working fine before this mysterious malfunction. How can I fix this? Thanks

Is there some way to reset the camera settings that might work? How can I test to see if the lens cover is somehow stuck or jammed?

Hi there

Adjusting camera settings may not have an effect on the stuck lens cover.

When the lower cover is retracted, are you able to use your finger to pull the upper cover down? If so, does it stay in the closed position when you do it manually?

Thanks

This is a program with the firmware that has been happening to all kinds of digital cameras. Either the lens itself is sticking, or the firmware will need to be sent in for upgrade.

I have a Nikon AF-S 55-200mm 1:4-56ED. Focuses fine, lens goes in and out fine...except...it doesn't retract completely flush with the barrel of the lens. Is this a big problem?

I do not have that particular lens in my collection, but not all lenses do completely retract to a flush position. If your lens performs well at all focal lengths and takes sharp pictures, it is probably ok.

My lens will shut half way, then turns off automatically. Once I turn the camera on. I Cannot take pictures. Any advice will help. Thank you

Hi Natalie:
Lens stuck, is common defective that need new lens unit replacement or just repairable.

Causes of a Lens Error: There are a number of ways with which a lens error can be caused. Particulates might have managed to get into the mechanical bits that allow the lens to retract, a purely physical interference with the lens mechanism. If the camera was dropped, especially while the lens was extended, there's a pretty good chance something might have been knocked loose, such as the guide pins upon which the lens withdraws and retracts.

How to Repair a Lens Error: As scary as a lens error might seem, there are some easy fixes. Before trying any of them out, however, first take a good long look at your camera warranty and maybe have a chat with the company. If the lens error will be covered under the terms of the warranty, go for it. Even some of the simple fixes mentioned below might void the camera warranty. Frankly, however, it's unlikely that a lens error will qualify for the warranty.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using Fixya, and have a nice day.

I had a friend that ran into the same problem, but his solution is not what I would recommend but it did work for him. He used sewing machine oil and applied a tiny amount less than a drop to the crevice of the camera body and the outer lens housing, his was stuck in the retracted position, and he got it going again without a problem.

Apparently the lens has had some kind of impact to cause the lens cover to be bent a little. What happens is that the lens cover holder , or ring, on the end becomes bent or misshaped to a degree. This then causes a binding effect on the diaphragm assembly.
What I have done is to very carefully (while using good magnification) pry up on the edges of the lens cover metal edging on the inside edges. This will release the pressure on the lens cover diaphragms.
But, be advised that this is can harm the lens cover more, unless you are extremely cautious. That means to use a small screwdriver or some such tool to pry up on the inside edges carefully.
Also be advised that too much pressure can cause the whole ring which holds the diaphragm assembly together can pop up and off. Then the whole assembly can come apart, and that is very hard and can be tedious to put back together.

Sony cybershot DSC-W170 lens malfunction

sounds like you have dust, sand of some type stuck in the retracting lense. Ive found someone to tell me to take out my batterys and SD card, then tap the bottom of the camera on a table top. Replace the batteries and power up. Doing this, I was told it loosens up the debri for the lense to retract to close and to open again.

Lens won't retract

There are special springs, motors, gears, and guides inside these lenses.
If your lens won't retract, one of the above is bent, misaligned, or broken. There is not a 'quick fix' that can be applied in your situation since it is a physical problem, not a software malfunction. You can try to dismantle yourself but speaking from experience you are likely to make the problem worse. If you are unwilling to attempt repari yourself, either take it to a repair shop or upgrade.

Lens error, restart camera

Lens error is usually caused by mechanical faults concerning lens assembly. The lens cannot extend or retract fully, the error is detected and lens error is returned.
Sometimes this can be fixed playing with the lens during extraction or retraction to help the lens asset getting back to normal.
More often the camera lens must be disassembled and re-assembled by a technician to fix the problem.

Lens won't retract

This error is caused by a faulty lens motor, contaminated transmission, or mechanical damage from dropping. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix for this and it requires service from Canon or other repair facility.

Lens cover only opens half-way

If the lens barrel isn't fully extending on power up, that will prevent the lens cover shutters from springing open. There is a stationary prong that pushes the cover closed when the barrel is retracted.

Does the camera work otherwise? Take pictures thru the half open lens?
