Question about Books

I'm writing a short story for my school but I have no clue what to name my 17-year-old awkward main girl character.?

No name ideas are coming to mind, and I only have a couple of days left until I have to hand it in! She is a brunette, she has blue eyes, she's chilled back, and she is normally overconfident as that is why she gets into awkward situations. (If I'm saying 'she' a lot it's because I'm writing fast.) I want a name not too recognisable, but not too unfamiliar. Any suggestions? x

Character names for a shy girl for my story?

Think of the two shyest girls you have known in your life. Select the first name from one and the last name from the other. This will perhaps give you a good inspiration on how they will act while getting over their fears of talking to people.

I'm writing a story based around a magical academy, does it sound too Harry Potter-y?

Judging by the information you included, I would say that (even if it bears some resemblance to Harry Potter) your world is unique to your own style. You said it yourself, too, houses are common in English schools. Not to mention the fact that schools of magic are a common theme in fiction itself.

Take "Little Witch Academia", for example. It's a magic school, there's witches and quills and all that, but the story is unique enough to be its own thing. As long as you put your own ideas into the story, it will be unique despite whatever it might remind people of. And even if it does remind people of Harry Potter, it could work to your advantage. If a scene is whimsical, it might bring back that feeling of going to Hogwarts for the first time, except the feeling is new because your story is also new.

Someone once said "good artists borrow, great artists steal". No matter what, you're going to find inspiration in things you like, it just happens, but the fact that you've taken that inspiration to put into your own world is great! Hope this helps!
