Is the actual ink any different than most common re-fill inks used for HP?? I have some ink I used for my old HP932. Will it work in my newer HP6500?

To refill 920:

1. If you have the plastic cap that covers the 9 mm. hole where you can see the sponge, then tape this cap to the cartidge with scotch tape. If not, use some duct/masking tape to cover the round hole.

2. Use the dry hypodermic needle to find the hole that will be found at the very center of the 920 label. With the needle, pierce the label.

3. Fill the hypodermic needle with 4 cc of ink.

4. Insert the needle 2-3 cm. into the hole made in step 2. Draw out 1 cc of air, then slowly force the 4 cc of ink into the sponge. Use toilet tissue to absorb any ink that might have escaped.

5. Let the catridge stand overnight (if possible) so as to allow the ink to evenly saturate the sponge. If not, insert it into your printer immediately.

Note: If you are going to refill catridges, be certain not to allow the sponge to dry completely. Thus, you might want to do step one immediately and to enclose it in a sealed sandwich bag upon removing an empty catridge from your printer even if you are not going to fill it immediately.

Regarding "meleskanos" "solution" that is really a question asking if it is true that when one refills an HP 920 ink cartridge for a HP 6500 printer if there is a computer chip that prevents it from working I can say this: Absolutely NOT. At least not for the black HP 920 cartridge in my Hp Officejet 6500 Wireless. I just refilled my cartridge according to the #1 solution given by "moderator" and it worked fine. My print level indicator for the cartridge still shows low but its still printing fine.

Regarding the "Clarification Request", I have been using the same ink I was using to refill my old HP Officejet G85xi cartridges without a problem.

  • danhunt Dec 08, 2010

There is also an option in the printer to turn off the ink monitoring feature:

On the printer control panel press the setup button, then select preferences, then select cartridge chip info, and press 1 to turn off the ink gauge.

I did this yesterday but now after I select "Preferences", no option is available for "Cartridge Chip Info". Maybe when you turn it off it doesn't give an option to turn it back on again? Crazy, but I have no option any more under "Preferences" for "Cartridge Chip Info".

  • cmk2112 Mar 16, 2011

I followed your directions and it worked for me. And The same thing happened afterward: The option to turn Cartridge Chip Info back on again has disappeared...

I used the drill method in the video. Took a while to get it printing again but so far, so good. THe low ink light went out so the pritner thinks the cartridge ink level went up as it did.
Will post again if it breaks.

Meleskanos, may well be true, I successfully refilled the other 3 cartridges, and these printed ok, but the black ran out shortly afterward. I refilled the black 920, but the 6500 will not print the black. The printer is displaying that there is a problem with the cartridge. I have shut down/started up the printer 2x now. Once started back up, it recognizes the black cartridge ok, but still will not print black.

I used the hole the guy in the video didnt want to mess with. I pushed it in using a nail punch. It filled quite easily and then covered it with a piece of tape.

I had the same problem with my HP 6500 printer.I refilled the black 920 through the middle hole under the label, be patient it will fill. It printed fine and the printer actually reset the level indicator to full. I later refilled all 3 color 920's after the printer showed they were empty. I figured it was worth a shot. Well, I went crazy it wouldn't print any colors and the printer showed they were still empty. I went into the troubleshooting sortware from HP and followed the instructions to auto clean the printer head and then the cartridges. Guess what, it began to print colors. The indicator still shows low but who gives s**t it works now.

The information you got meleskanos is probably more in the way of HP uses a proprietary chip that doesn't allow for "clone" refillable ink cartridges but does allow HP to sue companies that attempt to copy the specs. of it's cartridges. You can successfully refill an original HP cartridge because it contains that chip.
BTW- you can buy "clone" refillable ink cartridges, but the consumer must transfer the HP chip to the clone cartridge. Those cartridges allow, apparently, a greater volume and an easy refill access port. They're "made to be refilled". I have no experience with those cartridges as I think the chip transfer part would be a pain in the arse. Way to go HP, you won that battle!!!

I'll be damn ... I too have had this same exact problem with the black only. ALL other colors have been refilled successfully. For the life of me can't figure out why? Maybe Meleskanos is right after all. After re-reading his post he does state BLACK cartridge. But why wouldn't HP block the other colors also?

This works and is easy. no drilling or other nonsense or buying continuous ink systems.

http://www.ehow.com/how_7408694_refill-hp-920-cartridge-ink.html

and turn off the ink monitoring on the printer that reads the chips. its a useless monitor anyhow. this means the printer can still print even if you refill it.you can do it on the menu panel on the front of the printer.

I am using a continuous feed ink system with my 6500. There are also replacement cartridges as described by PirateMorgan. You do have to move the chip from existing cartridges to the new ones, but it's a one-time thing (though it took me an hour to get the chip positioned right due to the vendor template being wrong). The printer reports I'm out of ink, but it doesn't interfere with my printing at all, and my ink costs have gone down beyond my satisfaction.

A refill company here in Israel said that the black HP 920 cartridge that comes with the new HP 6500 has a computer chip that will not allow the cartridge to work after being refilled. Is this known to be true?

  • EVILHPdom Nov 30, 2010

the kicker here is that HP wants you to use OEM products period- there is a huge lawsuit out now about these printers giving false low ink readings so you will be duped into buying more of their overpriced cartridges. You CANNOT change the chips after refill but your printer will always show low ink-heres the key, DO NOT refill any cartridges that say empty as the chip will NOT allow printing for that color! hard to gauge whats really low or out but once it shows OUT on the printer its time to get ripped off w OEM carts. :^( thought you'd like to know....

  • dhinet May 24, 2011

EvilHPdom is exactly what I am thinking. I refilled all 4 of my 920 cartridges. they all worked fine except the Magenta! Why, why .... Ahhhh the magenta was empty, all the others were low.
I believe the answer is refill before the printer marks the chip empty. Once the chip is marked empty, it will not allow ink from that cartridge.
I think the people above, had their black cartridges marked empty, this is why they will not print.

HOW TO RESET 920 INK CARTRIDGE ON HP OFFICEJET 6500 AFTER HAVING IT REFILL

FYI, you cannot reset the ink it self. If your using an HP refilled ink cartridge the warranty of your printer will be void. you need to contact HP right away to purchase new ink cartridges.
If the cartridge has been refilled or remanufactured, 'Low on Ink' or 'Ink Alert' messages may be inaccurate or display incorrectly.

Don't waste your time and money.

Use only factory new ink cartridges from HP.

Apart from voiding any warranty that may be left on the printer, you can end up replacing print heads and getting very poor quality images from your printer.

I just refilled my HP6500 ink cartridge 920. The ink level indicator still shows a low level of ink. How do I reset the ink indicator.

There is no way to reset the ink levels on this cartridge type yet. Any replacement chips on the internet are violating patent law. Once the chip tells the printer it is empty it will not print no matter how much ink is left in it. There is always a lag time between the introduction of a new cartridge type and the ability to fill it properly. For refills I would recommend Cartridge World when this cartridge type can be refilled.

In the middle of a print job, my cartridge refill stops feeding ink. Printer MN J4680. Does this printer hold the cartridge # in memory in order to stop one from refilling?

HP printers do not remember the cartridge serial number to reject refills (certain Canon printers do though). It sounds like you have an air bubble in the sponge that is inhibiting ink from reaching the print head. I would guess that either you or the store/internet seller that refilled this cartridge hand filled it. These cartridges should be filled under a vacuum to remove air bubbles from the sponge and allow you to fully fill the cartridge (an air bubble takes up space that your ink could be occupying). I recommend Cartridge World or Office Depot for refills. Avoid internet sellers and refill shops that have one giant all-in-one machine that does the filling for them.
