Question about HP Officejet Pro L7780 All-In-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

L7780 printer persists on displaying "out of paper" - I've put paper in both trays, cycled power via the power button, cycled power by unplugging it, taken the trays out, taking the duplex feeder off... the problem appeared after I printed a single envelope then reloaded the paper. It is useless in the current condition. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Thanks for your suggestion. That's not the problem.

I believe it is more likely that a sensor is stuck, preventing the printer from recognizing when paper is loaded. Is there a way to diagnose that or reset it?

  • cliff375 Jul 21, 2009

Thanks for the suggestion. That did not solve the problem.

As I mentioned in my initial report, I've cycled power a number of times, both at the power source and at the front panel. I've taken the paper out of tray 1 and loaded it into only tray 2 to see if it will cascade the feed from there.

The rollers do not look dirty, and when the system boots and checks everything, it get through those checks just fine, then says "printing" then displays the "Out of Paper" message.

    The scanning funtion works fine.

I've seen in on-line HP user forums that I am not the only one to have had this problem. Any more guidance would be appreciated... the problem is not solved yet.

    Thanks again.

Hi Cliff,

From the description of the problem it looks as if the paper settings in the print driver do not match the paper loaded in the paper tray. (Since this problem came up after printing an envelope and the machine was alright prior to that.)

The paper settings in the print driver must match the paper settings for at least one of the installed paper trays. To adjust the paper settings in the print driver:

1) Open a document in the program used to print

2) Click on File, then click on Print , and then click Properties . The product Properties dialog box opens.

3) Click the Paper/Quality tab.

4) Choose the correct paper size from the Size is drop-down menu and choose the correct paper type from the Type is drop-down menu.

5) Click OK and then click OK again to print the document.

This should solve this problem. If the problem persists, do reply for further assistance.

Thanks, All the best.

    Hi Cliff,

    1) To reset the printer, without turning the printer off, remove the power cord from the back of the printer, then wait for 30 seconds and then plug the power cord into the back of the printer. If the printer does not turn on automatically, use the ON button to turn it on.

    2) If this does not solve the problem, then the printer rollers might need cleaning.

Also, make sure that the paper-width guide is pressed snugly (not to tightly) against the paper stack. See that the paper is completely inserted into the printer and can be picked up by the paper rollers.

Hope this resolves the problem. Please reply for further assistance if problem remains.

    Thanks.

    Hi Cliff,

Since you have tried all the possible troubleshooting steps and the problem is not rectified, so it seems that the printer has developed some hardware malfunction and it needs servicing. If this printer is under warranty, you can contact HP support or you can refer the problem to a qualified service technician.

    Thanks.

they want you to try resetting memory

  1. On the operator panel, press the <ON> button. (The display will go blank.)

Note: It may be necessary to unplug the power cord if pressing the ON button does not shut off the printer.

  2. Wait approximately ten seconds and then press the <ON> button again.

  3. Wait until the device has completed its cycling process

Note: It may be necessary to unplug the power cord and retry if the above steps do not clear the error.
these steps seem very simple and infective. my advice, check for a paper jam internal paper bits or a ripped piece of paper 41that is blocking internal sensors and indicating a printed page is stuck in the tray. also check the print cartridge did not dislodge during printing. it dose happen and they sometimes need to just be reseated to resume printing. their will also be issues with the units not working properly due to manufacturing defects. but the printer has a fairly dignified rating, remember all in ones are more complicated and theirs far more that can go wrong with them. so trouble shooting those things first will help in figuring out why it is not working. sometimes unplugging the printer from the wall and pressing the power button to try and bleed off excess voltage from the capacitors inside will get the unit to reset faster. but the printer sounds like it is displaying a internal fault code. see their manual downloadable here

Make sure the paper try is properly attached. Try to unplug the power of your pinter and the USB cable for about 2-3 minutes. Restart your computer. Plug the USB and power to the printer then turn it back on.

Printer says that it has a paper jam when it does not. I keep having to hit the "OK" button to get it to print.

Check if there is actually a jam, if not, then reset the printer.

1. Unplug the power cable from printer when the printer is powered on and wait for 20 seconds.

2. Then, press and hold # and 6 while plugging in the power cord.

Continue holding until it displays Semi Full Reset message in the front panel of the All-in-One.

Paper Jam cleared but?

It sounds like the paper sensor in the paper try is broken or jamed. Remove the paper tray and locate the paper sensor. Check if it is jamed in the up position or if it is broken.

My printer is only printing half the picture, one half comes out great and the other half has nothing

  1. Remove the power cable from the printer.
  2. Remove the paper tray from the printer.
  3. Remove the paper from the paper tray.

  4. Verify that the paper you're using has KODAK XTRALIFE Paper
  5. Insert the paper tray into the printer.
  6. Open the color cartridge door, then remove the color cartridge.
  7. If the color cartridge ribbon is torn or damaged, replace it with a new cartridge.
  8. Install the color cartridge, and verify that it is fully engaged.
  9. Close the color cartridge door.
  10. Connect the power cable to the printer.
  11. Wait for the printer to initialize (the paper may eject automatically).

NOTE: For the Photo Printer 500 and the G600 or G610 Printer Docks only, press the power button in addition to plugging in the power cable.
The printer's lights turn on. And after a few seconds, most or all of the printer's lights turn off. The printer will make noises while cycling. If a paper is stuck in the printer, while the printer is making the noises, pull gently on the paper to try and remove it.

Tray 2 Printing

Hi,

Couple of things for you to check out.

1. Is that you've enabled the second tray for the printer. This is normally automatic but to check go to:
START > Printers > L7780 > Properties
- Click the "Device Settings" tab
... then sort out the different setting so they are all correct such as paper size and of course "Tray 2: Installed"

2. The other more common issue is simply that the printer isn't sitting properly on top of Tray 2 and as a result it's not engaging the cog wheel properly to pick up paper.

This is one of those trial and error things where you pick up the printer and re-slot it down onto Tray 2 until it works properly.

Hope that helps...

1 Answer

Printer continues to indicate "out of paper" even after reloading and pressing "ok".

Check the paper tray - there's a "stop" that keeps the paper snugly in the tray. Make sure this stop is set on the proper paper size and isn't sliding when you put the paper in. That should solve it!

Unable to get faxes to print to legal size

Hi,

here are the steps that i want you to follow inorder to use the tray for legal size.

1. On your printer itself, Press the SETUP BUTTON.
2. Scroll Down, and look for the option "Preferences", then press okay.
3. Scroll down again, then look for Tray Lock, and press okay.
4. Under Tray Lock, you will have an options there;
- Tray 1
- Tray 2.
5. If you are using the legal size paper for tray 2, then choose Tray 2 and press okay button to apply. And if you are using the Tray 1 for the legal size, you can go ahead and choose Tray 1 and press okay to apply. And this should work.

If in case you still have issues setting it up, please inform me.
