That is pretty typical.

If you want to mount it to the window, then make sure the glass surface is completely clean. A generous amount of saliva on the suction cup will keep it up on the glass for a while.

You are better off using the adhesive backed suction cup disks and mount it to your dashboard.

My TomTom one xl is showing a big red X on the opening screen . and cant do and thing else.

If you have a big red circle with a white X in it, indicates that you have a serious problem with your unit:
1) Try a 'hard reset': while the power is on, stick a small (tooth/match) stick through the hole under your unit base and opposite to were the USB connector go, for a few seconds, remove the pressure on the stick will cause a complete system reboot if possible.

2) If above does not work, connect to the computer, use Windows Explorer -> Properties -> Tools > Error-checking to scan and repair any problem with your Tomtom drive & check if you still have a problem.

3) If above does not work, and this is usually the solution for 'big X error', use TomTom Home to restore from a previous backup followed by a device update while connected online.

Hope it helps: let me know how you go and good luck!

My tomtom is connecting fine to the computer, but once I get the pop up window saying my device is safe to properly disconnect and I disconnect it and try to turn it on without it being hooked up to the...

If you have a big red circle with a white X in it, it usually means that your TomTom One 'disk' is corrupted: first try a 'hard reset' , while the power is on, stick a small (tooth) stick through the hole under your unit base and opposite to were the USB connector go, for a few seconds, remove the pressur on the stick will cause a complete system reboot if possible.

Next, since you can connect to the computer, use Windows Explorer -> Properties -> Tools > Error-checking to scan and repair any problem with your Tomtom drive & check if you still have a problem.

If there is an error or you cannot reboot, hopefully you have a backup made either by copying the whole unit disk content or more traditionally via TomTom Home, I would suggest a complete restore your device content follow by a TomTom Home device update.

Hope it helps: let me know how you go.

My TomTom one no longer sees the aerial when it is connected. Is this a hardware fault or a service/subscritption issue?

Try resetting the device. You do this by sticking a paperclip into the small hole on the bottom of the receiver (check your users' manual for the details).

This may be caused by unplugging the aerial before shutting off the navigator.

Req voice selection everytime and reboots when selected

DONT error check with windows this can cause errors itself !

HARD RESET

Tends to fix quite a few problems and is specific to TOMTOM's that have the tiny reset hole on the bottom of the GPS

Commonly known as a "hard reset"

You need a paper-clip or something similar ( Avoid needles )

Paper clip in the tiny hole by the card slot.

Push it in firmly whilst the unit is powered up (not too hard) for about 3 seconds then release

You may have to power down and then up again and even hold down the power button a little longer the first time you do this

You may also have to do this without an SD card in.

If you have a card in then the windows error checking may give you some issues.

You may have to re-format the card (FAT-32)

And copy your tomtom files back to it from the tomtom itself..

Waiting for a valid gps signal

A couple solutions:

1) Make sure the TomTom can "see" the sky well... the GPS satellite waves are rather weak and easily blocked by trees, and anything not a window.

2) Hook up your TomTom to the computer (see details at www.tomtom.com or in the manual)

2b) Do a "sync" and download all updates. One of the updates is a small file that tells the TomTom where the satellites are located this week, and helps it sync up much faster. The longer time between uses, the longer it takes TomTom to find the satellites, and that can takes up to 2-5 minutes sometimes.

That can be frustrating with a car full of people waiting to get going and the driver doesn't want to drive without making sure the TomTom works and is giving valid directions.

No signal on my tomtom all day.

Often problems occour when you do not update your tomtom regularly. If you have not updated your tomtom via the internet for a while it will take longer and longer to find a satellite signal.
Try using the included USB cable and software to update your satnav and this should solve your problem
