Question about Troy Bilt 5.5hp Self Propelled Mower

Self-Propelled Model Starts, then dies after about 15 seconds

The mower is new -- bought earlier this summer. It ran fine the last time I used it, 2 weeks ago. The oil level is fine and it has a full tank of new gas. Since I started having this problem, I have to prime the mower at least 15 times to get it to start at all. The engine revvs up full throttle, runs for about 15 - 45 seconds, then dies. Then I have to prime it 15 more times to get it to start again. Every time I get it to start, it dies after 15-45 seconds. Someone suggested that I try cleaning the air filter, but I don't know where the air filter is.

I posted same problem as this couple days ago. Took mower to shop. The governor spring (located just under the air filter) had come off. So glad it was something so minor!

Your owners manual should tell you where the air filter is. It could also be a blockage in the gas tank at the fuel pickup point. Also check for a leak in your fuel lines. Many movers these days also have fuel filters if yours has a filter I would suggest replacing it. If all else fails the mower is under a year old you may have some kind of warranty coverage still in effect.

22 In Craftsman Self propelled.Starts easy, runs good for about 15-20 mins. Starts missing and dies. Will start again in about 30 mins New spark plug/ air filter

Oh my, that is so annoying. There is probably dirt in the carb. or the gas tank. What I think happens is, the dirt gets sucked up into the fuel line and clogs the carb, then when the mower sits for a while the dirt goes back into the tank for another couple minutes. I have absolutely no tolerance for this when it happens.

Starts but wont keep running

The fuel bowl has a float and needle, the bowl is filled with gas and over time the float gets filled with gas or just don't float as it should within the bowl. the needle is pulled up by the float which lets fuel flow into the carb. A repair kit can be bought for $5 and is easily replaced. After you take this apart, it's a good idea to clean the carb with a carb cleaner. You'll have to take off quiet a bit which looks difficult but it's really not.

Won't stay running

these carb /air filter housing gaskets were notorious for warping? there are 2 screws behind the air cleaner remove those and disconnect the throttle cable pull the black square housing off and replace the gasket with a rubber one from local mower shop?

Mower starts but boggs down and then dies

Sounds like the air filter media is full of muck.

You need to clean it.

Everything should then be fine....

Under load the engine sputters and backfires.

I had the same problem; The first 2 years the engine ran fine and then the third year it started backfiring, so I put a new carburetor on my engine and the same thing happened. The real problem was the valves needed adjusted. Yes I know, this is very rare, but it did happen. I decided not to try this adjustment myself and opted for a mower shop to do it. It cost about $50.00 and the engine has been fine ever since.
