Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I have a older Carrier heat pump, model 38YKC060. Does anyone know how cold it will continue to work at?

I have a EcoBee 3 thermostat. It lets you set everything. I don't know what temps I should set the strip heaters to come on at. Can anyone help? It's down in the low 20's and when the heat pump comes on, it's blowing nothing but cold air. I understand it needs strip help, but I don't know when to set them to come on. Any help would be great.

Heat pumps are of little or no value at temps around 40 degrees or below. And if you use the strips it will cost a small fortune if you have relatively high electric rates as most folks do.

Look real good at the terminal block. Look at both the left side and the right side of the terminal block. O should be there! You probably do not own a heat pump. Also have patients when programing the thermostat!

Dodge avenger 3.5 overheating with new thermostat no heat either

I would bet the water pump is either siezed or the impeller (which is plastic) is broken. One thing you can do is let the engine run until the temp guage reads in the normal position. Feel the upper and lower hoses. If one is hot and the other is cold than there is no coolant flow. If the thermostat where the problem than there would still be heat since the water pump is still working. If there was heat before you changed the thermostat and know there is no heat than you have air in the system and it needs to be purged. You can do this by removing the radiator cap on a cold engine. Top off the coolant as necessary. Start the engine. Continue to monitor the coolant level and add as needed. Let the engine warm up until the fans come on. Replace the radiator cap and you should be good to go. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

My Carrier model 38YKC060 heat pump unit fan does not come on and icicles are forming around the bottom. What do I need to do?

You must be having some very cold weather. Heat pumps shut the fan off when the temp. of the coils on the outside hit a certain temperature. That is to increase the pressure inside the unit to get more heat out of it. Your unit also goes into a defrost when ever it gets that cold also. But the compressor turns off also.

Now if your fan never comes on need to check the motor with a ohm meter. And check the capacitor it is a dual one meaning fan and compressor. One side can be out so need to check that also. Turn power off to the outside unit just pull the safety disconnect on the side of the house. Take the capacitor out ohm out the C side and the fan side. You will notice the Herm side meaning compressor. My guess is motor is bad. But I'm not there so concentrate your efforts there. Let me know how it goes okay. Ken

If your turning on heat and the unit is knocking and blowing cold air, your compressor is having problems in heat mode, could be reversing valve. A tech is needed in your situation. Getting the prob fixed right away will save you dollars..
