A high school education is sufficient enough to apply in a fire brigade job but since it's a competitive career, you can step up your game and get a fire science degree. Other methods of increasing your chances of getting hired is by getting a first aid training or become an Emergency Medical Technician. You can get more information at

To be a skilled fire fighter, you got to know about fire science. You should at least have a post secondary or non-degree award in any form of discipline related to it. However, some fire stations also recruit people who hold high school diploma at entry level.

What are the methods for evaluating learning and facilitation in outcomes based education

This involves gathering evidence of the students' abilities and knowledge, using a variety of methods directly related to the performance or outcomes which are required of a competent learner.

So if you were assessing a spray painting student, you would observe samples of the student's work, and also the student preparing for and carrying out the necessary tasks over a range of required outcomes.

You could assess any theoretical knowledge needed via an oral interview, or a written test (IF the student had the required writing skills already, you are not assessing that).

Colour discrimination could be assessed by asking the student to match several samples as closely as possible, or to mix up a matching paint pot.

And so on. Outcomes based education is distinct from Inputs based learning, where an approved syllabus is studied, teaching materials are often standardised, tests are sometimes unfair, and no great emphasis is placed on the abilities and knowledge required for a specific workplace. Therefore a lot of knowledge has to be gained later by experience.

I really like the 'full-face" US Diver Seal Mask and/or Aqua Seal Vista googles. (Both are actually swim goggles, not masks). However, I have an eye correction of 13 diopters, requiring prescription lens....

This shouldn't be a problem at all. It is better to have a eyeglass kit made that allows the use of prescription lenses to be installed inside of the mask. Remind your optometrist that glasses are regularly made and fitted to the inside of facemasks of self contained breathing apparratus (SCBA) for firefighters. You don't grind lenses for the facemask, you have the lenses mounted inside, and when you wear the mask, the glasses are held close to your eyes. The beauty of this is that when you buy a new mask, you just refit your kit into the new mask.
Best regards, --W/D--, a former firefighter, 25 years.
