There are several steps to successfully rounding.

Step 1 - identify the column in question
Step 2 - identify the column immediately to the right of this column
Step 3 - if this column is 5 or more, add 1 to the column in question
Step 4 - if this column is 4 or less, don't add one to the column in question
Step 5 - set all number to the right of the column in question to 0

In this case, 32,158, the tenths column is the first column to the right of the decimal. It is the 1 in this case. The number in the column immediately to the right is a 5. 5 if 5 or more, thus we add 1 to the tenths column and set all numbers to the right to zero or eliminate them.

32.2 is the answer I get.

Good luck,

Paul

you are correct as the second column from the decimal point is the tenths column but to find it to the closest tenth you have to look at the third column to see if the number is greater than five
    which makes it .16
as an example if you have gauges measured in .005" increments then the next size gauge up will be as --.005, .010 .015. 012, .0125

Isn't the tenths column the first column to the right of the decimal?

  • Bill Boyd Jan 05, 2017

of course you are right. .1 is 1/10 how silly of me to argue differently. my apologizes .9 is 9/10th and 10/10 is 1
don't know what I was thinking

No apologies required. My recommendation is just go back and edit your answer, and we can erase all of this irrelevant stuff;)

6.5km rounded to the nearest tenth

You need more information to round to the nearest tenth, you need the hundredths column.

For example, if the number was 6.54, we look at the number beside the tenth column, the hundredths column. If it is 4 or less, we round down and don't add one to the tenths column and the result is 6.5.

However, if the number was 6.55, the number beside the tenths column is 5 or greater, we add 1 to the tenths column and get 6.6.

Good luck.

How to round to nearest tenth with the number 25,099

TenTH = A fraction of a whole, the 'th' tells that.
So, since 25,099 is a 'Whole' number, with No fraction of a whole, or no part/fraction of 1, therefor, rounded to the nearest tenth, it remains the same.

How to round to the nearest tenths place in this number 40.981

Not sure if this is your question, but, the way we usually round down from 5 and round up from 6. Example: 1.586 rounded to the nearest 100th would be 1.59 , rounded to the nearest 10th would be 1.6... get it?

So, in your example, it would be : 40.98 = nearest 100th , 41.00 = nearest 10th , seeing as the .9 rounded up to a whole number, thus 1 !!

Hope this helps !!

Round 6.28 to the nearest tenth

(hundreds) (tens) (ones) DECIMAL POINT (Tenths) (hundredths)
So you have six and 28 hundredths. If nearest tenth is 2 the number after it is an 8, therefore the 8 is rounded UP to 10 and the 2 becomes a three.
