SOURCE: the EH mode is locked

Sound like power is going to the E H wire or could be touching or bad thermostat..! Disconnect wires and backtrack!

Hi!!! Does your ac unit work fine?If not check your low voltage problem..You have a low voltage problem check the wire going out to your condensor make sure that they are not touching..Good luck..Check low voltage wires..short in progress..

you need to go oside and look for a red reset button on the unit. you tripped the high ressure switch when you let your filter get that dirty. go check on this and when your done if it still is not working then ask me more.

Hi, On this model of heat pump, you will have a defrost board with termination times on the face of them. There will be 1 wire plugged into one of the times, such as 15 min., 30 min., and 45min. I just wanted to let you know this and this is what determines the start and stop of defrost. You also could have a defrost timer/ defrost relay and will have a defrost thermostat located on the liquid line on the condenser coil that will also start this process if needed. This is called time and temp. defrost. On the board, there is a test point on it and will tell you on the schematic how to test this board and put it into a defrost mode very quickly just by pulling a certain marked wire plugged onto a pin and placing it on a different marked pin. This way the service tech doesn't have to set and watch for 45 min.This you can try and see if it does go into a defrost mode.If you can manually put it into a defrost, you will need a new board, as it is not going into defrost in automatic.If it doesn't, you also have a faulty board. Being that heat-pumps have so many components on them, it is difficult to walk you through all components.Heat-pumps also have 2 TXV on them (metering devices) that meter freon into the coils 1 for heat and 1 for cooling.When you are in the heat mode, the condenser coil becomes the evaperator coil with the use of the reversing valve.What actually defrosts the coil, is when it goes into defrost, the reversing valve goes into the cooling mode sending hot gas to defrost the coil.You can try and check the board if indeed it is new enough to use a defrost board and not a timer.You can look through the window of the timer also if the unit is older to see if it is moving like a clock.If not, it is more then likely your problem.You will know when it goes into defrost as the steam from the melting ice starts to rise the unit appears to be on fire. I have had calls on this. The condenser fan also stops during defrost. A faulty TXV or expansion valve as I mentioned early on if plugged or not metering can cause this also. So, I am telling you there are some things you can check on your own, and without the proper tools and freon gauges, it would be very difficult to check every componanent without being onsight. Carrier has been around for many , many years and there units are of very good quality as is Day & Night And Bryant. But, check to see if you have the board, and if you can do the tests I have asked of you. A board can be ordered on line or purchased at an appliance parts store. PS (9 times out of 10, the defrost board is at fault or timer which ever you have.These units are difficult to trouble shoot without being onsight. Good Luck, and please let me know.

Is there any danger in running my Carrier HVAC in "Emergency Heat" mode all the time?


No theirs no danger in running the Emergency Heat all the time, Emergency Heat is your backup heat mode. when the Heat Pump is not working do to a malfunction or Defrost, the Emergency Heat kicks in. The Emergency Heat is usually electric heaters so your electric bill will be much higher.

All Carrier has on this is installation instructions & field wiring. If your heat pump is freezing up, then check your defrost board to see if the timing jumper for checking the freezestat is set to 30,60, or 90 minutes. If it is set to 90, then set it either to 30 or 60 for the board to check the freezestat more often to go into defrost. Then again, the system could be a little low on refrigerant.

My outdoor unit keeps freezing over. Why?


Hi, what is happening is this is a heat-pump split system. When it starts to ice the outdoor coil up, this unit has a defrost board, along with defrost thermostats that are clamped around copper lines with in the condenser unit. Both time and temperature activated. The board is time, while the thermostats are temperature. On the board, you can see 3 intervals, 30, 60, and 90 minutes. This is set by the factory and will have a small wire attached to one of them, maybe the 30 minute, all depends on the unit. If it doesn't go into defrost, and the ice keeps building and building, more then likely the defrost board is your fault. They are a problem on most all heat pumps. When the unit goes into its defrost mode, you will see the condenser fan motor stop, the reversing valve will shift into the cooling mode send hot gas through the outdoor coil to defrost all or most all of the ice. It will stay in this mode until time is up or the thermostat senses the line temp and tells the board to start the heat again. If you don't see this happening at all, you can replace this board on your own if you are able, as they are very easy to change out. Only if it is not going into this mode should you change it. Its normal for ice to form on the unit, but not to stay and not to defrost. If you are having to shut it off or using a hose to remove the ice, replace this board. You will need to get the part number off of the board, all of your thermostat wires also connect to this board, so you can make a drawing on how all is wired and take the board with you, or take all numbers from board and the model and serial number, and name of the outdoor unit with you to a appliance parts house to get one. If you have a Granger's anywhere close to you, this will be your best bet to find it. You have to be a C-20 or C-38 contractor to get one at a heating wholesale house. If this unit does go into defrost, and is heating OK, like I said, ice is a normal thing. There are only 4- screws holding the board in place. Turn off the power at the box near the unit. The board has 4 stand offs where the screws go through to keep it from grounding out to the metal behind it. I hope I have been of help to you. Please rate me on my help. I have a Carrier Heat pump that is iceing up in cold weather and not defrosting properly. Where is the switch to decrease the time between the defrost cycles? I understand there are 3 settings prossible...


switch for defrost is inside condenser your options are usually 30, 60, 90 minutes. you can not decrease times between defrost it is determined by a coil sensor it senses ice on coil and puts unit into be aware that heatpumps are only effecient down to certin temps.the switch you describe is length of defrost.

Heat pump doent kick back on after defrost-blows 5amp breaker


If you continue to blow the 5 amp fuse, you have a "short" in the control circuit. It could be the reversing valve solenoid coil (very rare) or it could be in the wiring. It is possible that you have a wire with cut or melted insulation that is causing the low voltage short. If this is happening only during the defrost cycle, then you want to check the wires going from your defrost board to your reversing valve solenoid coil. Also check the wires going from the defrost board to the defrost thermostat. Often, some electrical tape and some wire ties to pull the wires away from the area that damaged the insulation is the only thing that is needed to correct this problem. I hope this helps. As far as the refrigerant is concerned. Yes, it is possible to overcharge a system. It would have to leak out, but it is not uncommon to charge a system that has 5 years and perform a quick check for leaks. Sometimes systems have very slow leaks or the leaks reseal after time. It is better practice to charge it, look for obvious leaks and then see how it does than it is to spend hours looking for a leak that may not be found. It costs you more money and the tech more time. Hopefully, you used a reputable company to charge this system.

Carrier Condensing Unit clicks in HEAT mode / defrost problem


Replace the thermostat on your Heat pump, get the model number and search the net for a distributer. If that doesn't fix it, you'll have to call another serv tech, it could be that your defrost board is acting up.. Let me know for my info also, I'm curious as to what they find. Also, being a Contractor, I don't charge just to come out, I usually diagnose then tell the homeowner. Find a Contractor that will do this for you, if it's simple to fix yourself, he should only charge you partial serv call..
