I checked this out some years ago but didn't take it very far because the actual gains seemed very small and far short of the claims made by the guys who are selling plans and kits.
There is no doubt Mr. Tesla was a clever guy but he probably kept most of the "secret" in his head. The claims made don't seem to be anything to do with Tesla who probably thought his idea might have future possibilities but until then it was an interesting novelty to play around with.
I think some believe the principle can be used to harvest energy from cosmic radiation but that is currently improbable and impractical, at least as far as lowering the domestic power bill. The Tesla coil is basically a crude tuned radio frequency circuit similar to that used in the early days of wireless telegraphy and with a suitable antenna and a very good ground will harvest power from whatever stray radio signals of the frequency the circuit is tuned for.
Radio waves are electro-magnetic waves but you can't get more power out than is available to put into it. It is more likely Tesla dreamed of harvesting power from the Earth's own magnetic field which could provide usable amounts of power. I am not an expert but I believe the circuit would have to be tuned to a "very long wave" band meaning the antenna would need to be several miles long.
