That nut is probably your shut off valve. It is leaking, get a new one.

is gas running from Tank to carb? ethanol gas may have made mush to the inside of the gas line
Sounds like you do know what you are doing. I was thinking Keyway also but
I see you checked it. How about something silly like Oil Pressure sensor? Maybe too much fuel..bad float in carb?

Gas leaks when starting

Gas leaks? You didn't provide many details. If you mean leaks from the tank then it's probably a faulty gas line or tank, which wouldn't be to hard to fix. If you mean leaks from the engine then you have a bigger problem. Either way you are looking at a fire / injury waiting to happen. Before taking it to a repair shop, check the fuel line, tank, air and fuel filter, and most importantly the carburetor. When they malfunction the engine gets the wrong air/fuel mixture which can cause stalling - sputtering - flooding etc. If you're not sure, take it to a shop to be fixed, a few dollars isn't worth the risk to you or your house. Can't find the fuel line in my mtd series 300 snow thrower

that line has to be right there either on the bottom or side of that tank ,take the cover off and see where the fuel is coming from alot of times it is the bowl on the carburator that leaks this should be drained at the end of use so it does not get a clogged needle and seat at the end of the season , this is the number problem with things that are used only a few times a year and they let them sit with the fuel in the carbs ,

Snow thrower starts then shuts down after a few minutes

Hmmm... THAT sounds like you have an obstruction (ice???) in the fuel line or in the bottom of the tank.

Around the back of the engine, just below the cylinder cooling fins. The shut off should face you if standing in front of the recoil starter, for the fuel tank. The fuel line should wrap around I the side of the carb and be protected by the metal cover surrounding it.

I left gas in the gas tank of my snow blower for a year and now, I could not get to start. What do I do to get it started?

Carbureator has to be rebuilt or replaced, and filter and lines cleaned out.
Don't leave gas inside tank for more than 1 month.
Take to small engine repair shop
