Thanks, James - your answer was very helpful. I must have done something wrong on the vote button as it seems to have returned "Not helpful" - which was not intended at all; sorry!

If i buy a soundbar with hdmi connection will my tv need to have hdmi ARC to work with the soundbar

Hi, it's recommended than both have ARC HDMI ports, so you can control sound bar from TV too, but if this HDMI port is not available at TV, the optical or digital audio output can be used instead to get hi fidelity audio.

New 50" hisense tv .. unable to use hdmi for cable box .. tried different cables and all 3 hdmi outlets on tv ????

There might be a setting on your cable box for audio output. Use the cable remote and look in the audio section of the settings menu and select HDMI output. Mine is under Audio Digital Output in the Audio/Video menu.

Santo dp32649 want to hook up surround sound but sound won't come thru speakers in TV mode

If you expect the sound to come back through the HDMI connection when watching the TV as the source, e.g. using an antenna, then both the TV and the surround sound processor need to support Audio Return Channel (ARC), a feature new to HDMI 1.4. Further, most TV's even if HDMI 1.4 compliant support it on only one of the inputs - check the setup guide. To accomplish the same thing with older equipment, simply run a separate audio connection from the TV back to the surround sound processor.

Your TV does support Audio Return Channel (ARC). Try connecting your Bluray player to HDMI 2 and your sound bar to HDMI 1(ARC). You will need to make sure that VIERA link is turned on in the Setup menu of the TV.

Cant get tv audio through receiver directly (without satallite, Game, DVD connection)

If your TV doesn't support audio return channel (ARC, which is your TV audio routed back to the receiver through the same HDMI cable), you then need to connect your television audio-out to your Onkyo TV audio input, using a digital cable or an analog one according to the connections on the back of your TV. If you use a digital connection (optical or coaxial), make sure you have the proper digital port assigned to TV on the onkyo I/O assign menu/digital inputs.
In case your TV does support ARC, you need to activate it in the Onkyo's hardware/HDMI setup menu, either by turning on HDMI control (tv or receiver control each other via cable), or by turning ARC on (you'd probably need to activate ARC on your TV as well).
Hope this help,

No audio input from TV on DVD Home Theatre

U have audio signal incompatibility. If the audio output is digital it may not work with an analog input, etc.
