What is the difference between Porcelain and Ceramic tiles?

I asked myself the same question after seeing both types of tiles in a few bathroom showrooms in Kent - they look very similar.
Despite appearances though, it seems that there are a few differences.

1. Porcelain tiles are more suitable for heavy-traffic areas, such as indoor and outdoor floors. This is because they are typically denser and more hardwearing than ceramic tiles.
2. Ceramics contain a lower amount of kaolin than porcelain tiles
3. Porcelain is more expensive to manufacture, and therefore buy, than ceramic tiles.
4. Ceramic tiles are lighter and easier to cut than porcelain tiles.
5. Ceramics need to be glazed in order to become impermeable, whereas porcelain tiles are impermeable without the need for glazing.

These are just a few of the differences. A good bathroom products supplier should be able to explain the differences to you in more detail.

Cutting porcelain tile with wet saw and it breaks at the end of the cut?

Porcelain tile has to be cut painstakingly slow, especially the last inch or two to prevent the splitting problem you are having. When you are cutting tile, the sawblade rides up just a little as the tile is being fed into it. You'll notice it if you stop pushing the tile through and watch the head drop down just a bit. When you are getting to the last part of the cut, reduce the pressure you are using to push the tile into the blade so the blade can wear away the tile with little pressure and vibration as possible.

Is there someone (a professional) who will accept porcelain plates to drill to make a 2 or 3 tiered serving piece? Preferably on the east coast (near Philadelphia?)

You can do it your self stay away from the cordless drills get a carbide drill bit and a tube fill it with some water so it covers the peice of porcelain you want the hole in. Ihave know idia what a 2 or 3 tiered serving piece is. But if its made out of porcelain but if you have a high speed drill and bit and you can keep the peice cool you can drill perfect holes in it. It may take some time if the hole is 1/2 inch or more depending on how thick the meteral is put a peice of wood under the peice so you don't drill through the bottom of the tube. But small holes 1/4of an inch are much quicker to do. I dought you can find anyone else to do this for you And it sounds vary artsy but this how its done with tile and you can drill perfect holes in porcelain just go slow and steady and keep it under water at all times. good luck
