Possibly a faulty start/run capacitor
have a technician check it out
it will become a motor problem if you let it keep humming

Thanks for the info. Any idea if it will be expensive to replace a new capacitor? I turned the drum manually and got the dryer start but thought it migbt be better to replace the capacitor.

  • Bill Boyd Jan 04, 2017

what you have done to get the drum to start is further indication that the start/run capacitor is failed
capacitors start in price from as low as $10.00 aud to around $60.00 aud depending on the Uf and voltage specifications of the capacitor
It may be best to talk with a technician first then have him bring a capacitor with him to fit after he does a proper diagnosis of the problem

I assume you fitted the right value capacitor and connected it up correctly,if you have then slip the belt of the motor, and make sure it is free to turn with no resistance.
Try it without the belt on, if it runs o/k then problem is elsewhere, if it still does not run , then you could have faulty motor, and or timer. That is as much as I can help you.
Plz rate my solution.
Thanks.

That is the sign of a bad capacitor. It is the capacitor which gives the motor the extra boost it needs to start up. Mine has blown twice (due to overlaoding by the kids).

Hello,
Those symptons (humming/buzzing ¬ starting) are 99 out of a 100 times a sign of a motor that has locked up.

Sounds like what you said. Time for a motor. The motor has an internal overload and will shut the machine off if the motor runs hot.
Good Luck

Hotpoint TDC62p is making a buzzing/humming sound and the drum will not spin though it does move if you push it.

Either something is binding the blower wheel up or the motor is bad. The best thing is to take the front of the machine off to access the blower wheel to verify ifanything is indeed binding it.IF not read the next section.
If you can turn the drum and then the dryer starts you have a bad motor. The way the dryer works is when you initially push the start button, electricity is sent to the start winding, or stator, of the motor. This will in turn start the motor turning. From there the stator will drop out of the electrical process and at the same time the run winding, or rotor, will take over and the motor will continie to run. Your stator is damaged, has a burn spot, etc so by you turning the drum, the belt around the drum is moved which is attached to the motor pulley. You basically take the place of the stator. Long story short, you have a bad motor.

Maytag mde9700 no power and has buzzing sound

Usually on these models if it sounds like a stuck motor sound could be the motor or the pading on the drum that peeled off and probably stuck between cabinet and drum

Tub stopped turning, connot turn by hand either.

Hi,
Dryers have a belt that turns the drum, I think dryer belt being broken or slipping badly, burn out motor, or worn support parts.
---Dryer have a belt that rotate the drum, If the belt worn out or broken, it can not move the drum then you just need to replace it. ---You can check motor by hearing buzzing sound, if the belt has the problem. If you do not hear any sound from the motor then you may have to replace it. ---Try to move drum manually (by hand), if it is hard to turn then problem with the idler pulley, glides, or drum rollers.
I hope this will solve you problem

Thanks..!!

Amana electric dryer just stopped working. I pushed the knob, there was a loud buzzing sound, and then the dryer just stopped

Hi,
The buzzing sound is the motor trying to start and not being able to. There is either something stuck so that the motor can't turn or the motor is bad. The most likely case is that the motor has failed.
You can trying turning the drum by hand and make sure that it is free. Also by turning the drum you will sometimes get the motor off of a "flat spot" in the motor and it will run for a while again.

I hope that this will help you to solve your problem!

Thanks for using Fixya!!

Motor is noisy (loud buzzing). Drum belt seized.

the problem, is with a component, called a capacitor.a capacitor gives a"jump start"to the motor.when this charge or jump start cannot be given, the motor will "hum" or"buzz".a new capacitor should not too expensive.

LG dryer will not start just buzzes

Try this:
Unplug the dryer, reach inside the drum and try to rotate the drum 1/4-1/2 turn. Plug the dryer back in a push the start button. Sometimes motors get dead zones in them, and this will move it from that zone.
If that doesn't work, then you will have to go farther.
If you have a front loading machine, remove the front, this will expose the belt and drum, check the belt to see if it is broken, if not then remove the drum and belt and this will expose the motor, idler arm with pulley, Your belt may have slipped off the motor pulley or the idler arm pulley.
Before reassembly, lubricate the drum rollers at the shaft with a good grade of machine oil such as 3 in One Oil.
I hope this helps

Whirlpool condenser dryer not working. Power coming in to machine but that is about it.

hiya
does the machine make a buzzing noise? or heat up?

if it makes a buzzing noise and heats up it will more than likely be the motor surpressor, all this does is gives the motor a kick start to set it off tumbling with a wet load. theres a quick way you can check if it is this at fault, make sure the drum is empty and set timer as you would normally, open the door and spin the drum as hard as you can then shut the door quickly (whilst drum is still turning if you can), the dryer should now run normally until it stops again.

hope this helps

please dont forget to rate the helpfulness of this reply, thanks kj
