You did not post the make and mode but if this is an older audio system then the volume control is a film deposited variable resistor. They get dirty and need to be cleaned. You can get contact cleaner or wd-40 and spray the control to clean it. NOTE that you cannot spray it from the front, you must disassemble it enough to get to the point you can spray into the actual part from the back and possibly under it.

My marshall classic reverb 30 makes sound some times and some times when you play with the volume knob it stops

The volume control knob PROBABLY is broken, dirty or has bad soldering to the circuitry.

Use some CRC226 in the control if dirty. While you have the unit apart, check the soldering and for any circuit board cracks.

Behringer B215A replaced volume level knob does not respond.

You DON'T replace the board. If it is cracked, you bridge insulated wires around the cracks and epoxy them down.

Often the pads break from the traces near the pots. Look for a small crack between the pad of the pot and the circuit trace leaving it. Common problem.

Marshall MG50 DFX, the volume knob OD channel crackles

Either the control is damaged (happens if they get hit) or it is possible the circuit board it is mounted on has broken solder OR worse, a crack near the control. The unit will require servicing. Parts are readily available.

We have a Denon AVR 1905/785 We cannot turn the volume down.... it is at -70 and full blast... the volume turns up and gets even louder.... but can't turn the surround sound down... help

if the volume control as been forced the conection in the switch as jammed +vol .this is usually a small preset under the knob the right hand one.pull the knob off pulling straight as not to bend spindle some time's the two presets are visable.a cotton bud dipped in spirits could solve your problem but some times you need to pull the top of the preset .it might need removing and replacing . this could be a more complicated problem caused by a variety of things here are a few,dry joints, cracked pannel .hope some of this helped . if in dire straits skype me farr64

My reciever volume cuts in and out and crackles when adjusting

You can CLEAN / LUBRICATEthe volume control know with a CONTACT/CONTROL cleaner, I use a product from Radio Shack, this works wonders on drum type electo mechanical devices which are basically volume control knobs, easy to do, just remove the round knob and spray into the openings with the small tube attached, and rotate in both directions, be sure to unplug the unit first, on a few occasions it is best to remove the front panel to acheive better coverage to the rheostat type volume body, anyway it always cures the crackling and distorting sound, I would give this a try before replacing the part.

Volume Knob does not adjust volume, but remote does.

Check your owners manual for "factory reset" this will reset the main micro-processor. Otherwise the encoder (volume pot) needs cleaning, soldering or replacement. It could also be a cracked circuit board (if it has recently been hit)

Harman Kardon AVR510 - At random times the volume will creep upwards. Other times it will shoot upwards. The remote works every time to turn it down, & the knob on the unit will work 50% of the time...

I have worked on two h/k for no sound. The only problems I have found are bad solder joints. You have to look very close to see the cracks. Most of the are found at board conectors. The last one I worked on did not look like there were any bad solder joints, but after resoldering 100 pins on boards the unit came to life. I would start with the volume control. Their is a nut that holds the control tight to the frount face under the nob. If the control feels loose, moves side to side I would suspect your loose conection to be at the control itself. Make shure to tighten the nut on the control after you fix.
