If it is battery and coil ignition it is possible the electric start is consuming so much current the voltage to the ignition system is falling and reducing the spark intensity. A larger battery or a capacitor discharge or other high-energy ignition system would be the answer.

An insufficient cranking speed is another possibility especially if the engine is 2-stroke, is 4-stroke with a performance cam, is old and worn or is magneto ignition.

I have a Goldwing battery It for winter use and there is weak spark when cranking by electric start but when it starts spark is great. My coil and ignition is an all in one package.Thank you for your comments

Hi I also had a good battery charger connected and it was cranking quite fast but the spark was still a bit weak.Is there a diff in pick-up coils for an elect start compared to pull start

So you are saying your ignition system is an energy transfer type using an ignition coil being driven by a winding in the flywheel magneto? Those are notorious for being merely adequate and rely on the points and condenser being in exceptionally good order. It is possible the wrong coil has been fitted at some time so that would be worth checking.
Converting the ignition system to a ballast type coil and battery system would be feasible if the generator is good enough to keep the battery charged but a high energy system would be best.

My system has a coil and ignition system combined in one unit. It does not have points --- it has pick-up coil and stator winding. The stator windings provide current for the ignition coil and module and charging system. When running there is plenty of spark on the plugs while cranking there is a much lesser amount.

Ok. It is still an energy transfer system but brought up to date and not much more efficient than the old type but maintenance free. I have never tested the theory but I have read that a good pull on a starter cord produces a short burst of revolutions that exceeds a normal cranking speed - of course we talk about revolutions but it is piston speed that is important, consequently a short stroke engine must rotate at a faster speed than a long stroke engine for successful starting. Honda famously overcame the problem by using a clockwork starter on a couple of their models.

We have a toro model 20031. The battery doesn't work and my husband disconnected all battery connections. Should the engine still start with the pull cord?

leave all the battery connections connected, then prime the carb, and pull to start, i have a quad with an electric start and a pull start, it will not start with the pull cord if the battery is not connected.

The pull cord on my jiffy ice auger model 30 has broke and I need a new one. I do not need a new ice aguer just the pull cord which is located at the top.

if you just need the cord -- most hardware stores do carry replacement cord ( sold by the foot ),, if you look in the chainsaw department you should be able to find the size that you need. as soon as you have the cord you can re spool the winding unit and this will restore the pull start function.
you can also buy the cord at your local lawn and garden shops, snowmobile shops or chainsaw shops.
if you have any further questions about this problem -- please feel free to ask,

My pull cord on my polaris ind xlt broke can i put it back on

YOU WILL HAVE TO REMOVE YOUR RECOIL TO PUT A NEW PULL CORD IN. THIS IS DONE BY REMOVING THE EXHAUST THAN REMOVE YOUR RECOIL ASSEMBLY. BE SURE TO WIND THE RECOIL BEFORE INSTALLING YOUR NEW PULL GORD.
