Question about Frigidaire Refrigerators

Open Question

My Frigidaire thermoelectric wine cooler has started making a chirping noise and the controls operating temperature and interior light no longer responds.

I experienced a power outage due to a passing storm. Once power was restored, the issue began. Prior to that, this unit has operated very well for years. The sound is coming from the bottom section of the unit and not from the main board or exterior fan. Can the issue be easily identified and repaired. The unit is only about $150, but the model is no longer being made.

SOURCE: U-Line 15WC Wine Cooler Problem

I just had the same problem. Also, I was getting a burning smell. The coil on the unit was blanketed with dust and dog hair. First, I cleaned it all out and tried it. It really didn't do much and I still had the burning smell. I then opened the back and recognized that the fan was not working. Turned out to be really dirty. Cleaned it and no it is working fine.

SOURCE: Noisy Wine Fridge

The problem is likely with one of the two fans. A new fan is available from Danby (1-800-263-2629). My noisy fan is the condensor fan located at the bottom rear of the device. After removing the cooler from under the cabinet, the source of the noise was obvious. You will need to tell them whether it is the upper fan or lower fan. Leave the cooler upright for a few hours before you plug it in so that you do not damage the condenser. Price for the fan from Danby is $20.15 including shipping. You may need to change the cooling system on the unit if the unit is free of dust and still does not cool.

usually bad power supply, if the cooling fan isn't running either. These are horribly inefficient coolers that use a lot of power to accomplish little cooling. The power supplies are quite notorious to burn up.

If your supply is 12vdc output, you might be able to replace it with a supply from radio shack. dont use a battery charger though.

Wine cooler cools but has a very loud, too loud to ignore, whirring sound when it is in cooling mode. Any ideas?

And when the wine is cooled ... the noise stops?
It's like a refrigerator ... it only operates when it it is reducing temperatures. Once things have cooled, the system cuts out.

If your wine cooler stops making a noise when the wine is cooled ..ok.

Does a thermoelectric wine cooler have a ventilation system?

Absolutely, every wine cooling system has to have a ventilation system that will channel the heat generated in the operation, outside of the unit, including the thermoelectric wine cooler.

Can I install a thermoelectric wine cooler as a built-in cooler?

No. If a thermoelectric wine cooler were built-in, it would not be able to dispel the heat it emits and the fridge would not be able to reach the necessary temperatures.

Why should I buy a thermoelectric wine cooler as opposed to a compressor model?

There are many reasons to purchase a thermoelectric cooler including, but not limited to, being quiet and eco-friendly. Personally, I prefer thermoelectric coolers because they don't vibrate. The vibration of a compressor cooling system can cause the sediments in the wine to be disturbed and affect the flavor/taste of the wine.

What is a thermoelectric wine cooling system?

Thermoelectric cooling is best used in small wine coolers. Small fans from inside the cooling fridge evenly dispense cool temperatures throughout the interior of the unit.

Thermoelectric plate does not appear to transfer heat

you should see if theres a DC voltage going to the plate or not. it should noticeably heat up instantly with proper voltage applied. if power is there and it doesnt heat then the thermoelectric device needs to be replaced. also you should be able to measure a resistance of the plate. Should not be shorted or open. it should be a relatively low resistance. like a few ohms. and it may read different depending on which direction you connect the leads.
