Simac il Gelataio Magnum repair: what kind of grease to use?

I will be replacing a broken drive gear. There is some thick black grease that was used initially I bought it in 1992 and this is the first time it as been taken apart. Does anyone have any suggestions for 1, the type of grease to use for the gear and 2, whether to put grease on the belt, as well? Also, there is an admonition about keeping the machine upright. I worked from the bottom to expose the drive train and could replace it in the same manner, although, obviously it would be easier with the machine on its back. Does this have something to do with the refrigerant? If not, what?

The grease is most likely a lithium based grease. If there is absolutely no chance of it coming in contact with the product. If there is a chance it contacts the food then it has to be a food based grease. Never lube a belt! The reason that you are not supposed to lay the unit flat is because the cooling systems have oil in the coils along with the refrigerant. When laying it down, the oil can move into the expansion tube and cause it to plug up and make the compressor fail. You can lay it down, just don't start it for 24 hours after you stand it back up. This allows the oil to drain back down.

Where can I get a gear wheel that takes the paddle shaft. Teeth have broken off mine.

Alan, there unfortunately are not any canister ice cream makers that the manufacture sells the replacement gear wheel.

Unfortunately when you have gear issues or motor issues there are not any replacement parts and they have just become a throw away item.

What causes the simac il gelataio to quit churning?

If you give the paddle a nudge, will it start ? If so most likely the big capacitor inside the machine. This capacitor will kick start the motor. If it is gone, the motor does not get enough power to get going. It is easy to replace once you have the cover off and should cost around $7.

I have an old Simac Il Gelataio Super. I believe the clutch is broken. It will only churn until the product is very soft. Then the blade stps because the drag on the sides is too great. Is this...

It sounds like the main gear is cracked were the paddle shaft goes though it.the d shaped shaft is spinning when the ice cream gets firm. i repaired mine by making a sleeve out of copper pipe and slid it over the cracked part. works great.

We just bought a new Rival ice cream maker and the motor does not spin at all when we plug it in. Any solutions?

Sometimes just taking it apart and oiling it or putting lithium grease on it will help. I deal in used small appliances, and am able to resuscitate many ice cream maker motors this way. If that doesn't do the trick, you can check here for parts:

New motor makes loud noise when operating

Use a food grade grease to lubricate the gears. The newer White Mountain freezers have Chinese made motor drives and are a piece of junk. Don't confuse the newer models with your old American built machines. If it's still under warranty contact the manufacturer for warranty repair. Read the most recent customer reviews for the 4 & 6 quart electric freezers on Amazon and other websites. You will see a rash of motor failures!

Gearboxes definitely go bad. The first sign is usually noise, I would describe it as a rumbling. The best way to determine if it's the gear box is:
1. empty and disconnect machine from power.
2. remove the freezer door and beater assembly
2. remove the rear panel - 4 screws
3. Remove the belts on the noisy side
4. Spin the big pulley and listen for the noise, you may want to remove the belts on the quiet side to compare the two.
I have a video that was shot to help change the hex coupler, but you would follow all of the same steps to replace the gear box.
