This is a "Sensor" issue, there is a sensor that detects when the Cover is closed, this is either faulty, not being activated, or being activated but not registering at the CPU. Sometimes it is an actual switch, others it is a hall effect sensor, optical, magnetic sensor or the like. Have a squiz and see if ya can see any sensor etc. maybe its blocked etc. Otherwise I think it's gonna have to go 4 repair.. If so get a firm "Quote" B4 allowing them to proceede.

SOURCE: error is inner cover is open.
The "inner cover" can be seen if you open the paper output door, which
you have to do to open the "printer cover" to get inside the machine
and install the ink cartridges. The inner cover is a black bar right
inside here. Push it up firmly enough , and it will snap up.

If the 6 flashes are accompanied by an on screen message #5400, this is a "Service Call Error" code.
This code indicates the following;
Internal temperature error
The solution to this is the following part replacementl
- Logic board ***'y (QM2-1548) *1
*1: Before replacement of the logic board ***'y, check the waste ink amount (by service test print or EEPROM information print). If the waste ink amount is 7% or
more, also replace the bottom case unit (QM2-1205) or the ink absorbers (QC1-4222 / 4223 / 4224 / 4263 / 4264 / 4864 / 4221 / 4257) when replacing the
logic board ***'y.
[See Section 3-3. Adjustment / Settings, (6) Service mode, for details.]

SOURCE: canon pixma mx 320 error 5800
there are two ways you can remove the error message from your printer..
the first is to reset the printer and the second is to replace the waste ink absorber. If the reset thing did not work for your then you'll be spending money to replace the absorber.
How to reset? follow these steps
1. Turn off your printer
2. Press and hold the STOP/RESET button
3. Press and hold Power ON button
4. While holding the Power ON button, release the STOP/RESET button
5. While holding still the Power ON button, press twice the STOP/RESET button
6. Release the Power ON button
7. Wait until it display an "idle" message. It will take about a minute.
8. When "idle" appear, open the top cover to expose the cartridges.
9. Lift up the cover for cartridge holder and take out both the black and color cartridges
10. Return the cover of cartridge holder and turn off the printer
11. Return the top cover and turn on the printer again
12. After the printer initialize, return the cartridges.
Hope that solve the waste ink absorber in your printer..

As a technician, I have worked on tons of printers. This particular error had stumped me for a while, but I finally found the cause. As others had pointed out before, it can have alot to do with some obstruction in the print path, the gears, or ink on the clear plastic encoder strip. You're on the right track - I found the the purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) was not lubricated well enough from factory. If you lubricate the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or the black caps) the mechanism can now slide more freely, and the unit can park the head properly without giving you the dreaded head homing error 5100 (or E-2-2 on the LCD display) Keep in mind that this repair will probably require you to remove the right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism. There are two screws behind the printer, and two in front for each corresponding side panel (the front screws are behind the grey front panel of the printer - open the top cover to see the clips which hold the front cover on).
Let me know,if needed further assistance.
Hope i helped you.
Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!
