Hi there, I wanted to install a fresh copy of xp into my laptop a Toshiba Satellite L300-07R. But I deleted my D drive that contained my Vista install. My question is, is there anyway of backing my hard...

You might be able to restore some of the information, but since the partition has been deleted (and most likely partially overwritten) I wouldn't bet on it.

As far as I know, you can order a new restore disc from Toshiba that contains the factory image, that way you can use the 4-8GB of disk space it would normally take up.

Chat it up with Toshiba technical support, since you cannot order the discs directly from their website.

Good Luck!

I installed OpenSuSe 11.1 on my external hard drive by mistake. Now my important and sensitive files and folders are lost. I don't know how I can restore my old data back. Please help! Thanks.

Ups. This is not good.
Suse is another operating system which on auto install erase the harddrive and autopartitioning it.

No much help. You can try to use a format recovery software. Maybe you are lucky
Also verify if Suse left a FAT32 or NTFS partition

I have a HITACHI 60 gb hard disk. tried to install os but "cant find any hard disks" appears. i can see the disk in the BIOS also suse linux does not find the same. it is a toshiba laptop i am using. will...

there are many reasons why, the computer would,nt find or see the Drive.
1:) the laptop drive, may need formatting.
2:) the drive, is not cabled correctly.
3:) the drive is faulty.

go into the bios setup, usually F2 Or esc Or Delete at setup. options sometimes appear briefly on screen. ** to enter setup press F2 Or similar**
find boot sequence or bootup order. and set the CD/DVD to become the first boot device.

Put your setup-install disk, in the dvd drive.
When rebooting the system, the computer will start a setup from CD/DVD. this will tell you that the drive is not found, or needs to be formatted. follow the on-screen options.

Finally, certain laptops only recognise, a drive of a certain size. install the original to see if this still works. Also check there are no limitation jumpers on the old-drive. ( small plastic bridging pins )

My sata hard hard drive is not detected in linux

Check in your BIOS settings that SATA drives can be seen as "ATA"
Install Linux, and then , after everithing went OK, change BIOS to SATA again.

Drivers required

SCSI Drivers are only an optional part.
This is not a problem with your driver floppies.

The problem is with the linux being preinstalled on the HD.

Linux uses many types of file-systems. Even if it was NTFS or FAT, it is most probable that windows xp cd won't be able to recognize it; because, it may use unsupported method of formatting.

What you have to do is;
1. Format the two HDs by either
  • Moving it to another windows or linux computer and fully formatting the Hard Disks using fat32 or NTFS (supported by windows). If it is a windows PC using for formatting, no problems. If it is a linux system, delete all partitions, and format the drive in FAT32 or NTFS and here, ONLY CREATE ONE FULL PARTITION COVERING ENTIRE SIZE OF DISK.
  • By a linux installation CD and here too, format the drive in FAT32 or NTFS and here, ONLY CREATE ONE FULL PARTITION COVERING ENTIRE SIZE OF DISK.
2. Install the windows xp in it, using the same booting from CD Porcess. Here, you may or may not choose to install the SCSI drivers ( the floppy you got by pressing F2 when it says to do so in the installation immediately). It is good not to install the SCSI drivers if it is not a necessity for you.

Now, you can create any number of partition, format, etc during win XP installation.

How can i installed driver of sata hdd for linux red hat

if you are installing red hat 8 and higher there is no need to install extra driver because linux is the only operating system which will install everything including drivers, office suite, programming tools etc .... as far as my suggestion dnt install old versions of linux instead install new version ... there are many linux available
ex: fedora core 4,5,6 ,knoppix live cd linux ( which boots linux from cd no need install it) ,ubuntu, red hat, mandrake, suse ....
you can download it from net 4 free as linux is open source 4 all ...
be careful while installing linux especially during partitioning..... if u make a mistake you will lose all datas

Cant install xp on my maxtor SATA 6V160E0 UDMA6

*If you have access to another computer with a cd burner*

One way is to download the universal boot cd, boot a linux rescue disk image from it and use fdisk to remove all partitions.
This way the disk will be seen by windows setup again.

This is a silly bug in windows setup i've discovered a long time ago. When it does not understand the partitions on a disc it just hangs during the setup screen.

Download the iso image from then burn the iso image to a blank cd. Put it in your dead machine's cd drive and boot from it. Then choose one of the linux boot options.

When linux is up and running type fdisk ENTER
Then press p and a list of partitions comes up

Press d (delete) and then the number you see after /dev/hda etc.

Do this for every partition you see listed or just for
the first if there is data on the second/third/etc..

Press w (write) q (quit) and reboot with the windows cd in place.

p.s. This does irreversably remove
partitions and data on the disk!
