I need to replace the prime bulb but can't seem to remove the fuel tank even after removing the plastic support foot

SOURCE: Craftsman trimmer won't prime

A new carburetor would be simplest solution. You could try disassembling the carb, cleaning and replacing diaphrams, but just replacing the carb would be my choice. What is the model # on the trimmer and I can tell you the part # of the carb you need.

it sounds like the filter on the fule line is cloged try to remove the filter and then try to prime the trimmer. it it does you need to replace the filter. just about any filter that will fit will do.

SOURCE: license plate bulbs on 98 Park Avenue

License Plate Lights Removal & Installation 1997 – 2000 To Remove:

License/backup Lamp Assembly

  1. Remove the rear compartment lid trim. (if necessary)
  2. Disconnect the license/backup assembly connector from the body harness.
  3. While removing the license/backup lamp assembly from the rear compartment lid, disconnect the harness grommet from the rear compartment lid.
  4. Remove the license lamp housing from the license/backup lamp assembly.
  5. Remove the license lamp bulb from the housing and socket.
To Install:
  1. Install the license lamp bulb into the socket and housing.
  2. Install the license lamp housing onto the license/backup lamp assembly
    • Torque the fastener to 18 in-lb (2 Nm).
  3. While holding the license/backup lamp assembly, install the harness grommet to the rear compartment lid.
  4. Install the license/backup lamp assembly
    • Torque the fasteners to 53 in-lb (6 Nm).
  5. Connect the license/backup assembly connector to the body harness.
  6. Install the rear compartment lid trim. (if necessary)

I would recheck the carburetor to make sure you put the diaphragms next to the carburetor and not the gaskets.
Please if it is not priming you may have the fuel lines hooked up wrong. Also check the fuel cap to make sure the vent assembly is there. If the tank is not venting, the tank will get a vacuum in it not allowing fuel to flow.

to replace the fuel line you need to remove the cover over the carb and the fuel cap. (empty all fuel from tank) then use a small gauge wire to fish out the end with the filter in the tank. attach a small piece of small gauge wire to the fuel line. then remove the old line from the carb and pull the old line back from the tank. to anstall the new just reverse the operation.

Primer bulb won't pick up fuel, bulb, lines, filter seem ok. bulb creates pressure in the fuel tank when priming but no fuel will enter the bulb.

Your problem sounds like an internal problem inside the carburetor. I would first check fuel filter inside tank, but if that's ok, I would remove and clean carb. If you don't feel comfortable with this bring it in to a repair shop. Good luck. Hope this helped!

primers pull fuel from the carb and dumps it back into the tank, so if the bulb will not prime the chances are the fuel filter in the tank is blocked, pull the fuel hose through the filer hole and replace the filter on the end.

Model # 358.797180, 200 mph. At first I thought problem was carburetor being gummed up due to being improperly winterized by previous owner. Replaced carb with new, did not fix problem. Also replaced fuel...


The primer is just a small pump that is supposed to pull fuel through the carburetor from the tank supply line/fuel filter. The filter is supposed to be connected into the longer line at the rear of the tank. This lines goes to the carburetor uppermost port and the lower port is tied to the inlet side of the primer pump. Remove the tank side line from the pump during the pump test to make sure that you are not pulling fuel into the pump from the exit line. Try pumping fuel at this point--if nothing happens, swap the port connection at the pump and try to pump again--when correct, it will fill the tank supply line first, then the exit line from the carburetor that goes to the pump and finally fill the bulb. If you don't get fuel with either connection, then you have a leaking fuel line somewhere as you have already replaced the carburetor. Most saws use a rubber fuel line, not clear plastic. Hope some of this helps!

I changed all of the carb gaskets, fuel lines, even the rubber piece the lines go into the gas tank. Now when I try to prime the carb for start up it seems the gas is being pushed into the tank and not...


The leak at the fuel tank is not related. Sorry. What you have is a blockage in the carb itself. Take it back off, take it apart and carefully clean all the orifices. In the plate under the primer bulb, there is a one way valve. Make sure it is clean, use aerosol carb cleaner and spray thru the valve. Remove the locks from the adjustment screws and remove the jets one at a time and blow carb spray thru them also. If you did not replace the strainer screen before, replace it now. It is located under the plate nearest to the fuel inlet. When reassemble, make sure the gaskets are in the same order as the originals. Diaphragm side...paper gasket against the carb body, then diaphragm. On the inlet side, thin cellophane first, then the thicker gasket, then the outer plate. The adjustment screws should be turned out 1.5 to 2.0 turns.

Sounds as though the fuel filter may be plugged. The filter is in the tank. Take a look, see if it is visible. Remove and replace. Good luck...Lee

My explorer ran out of gas, i filled it up to about a half a tank, now it just turns over but wont start


if it's fuel injected,look on the fuel rail for a schrader valve--looks just like a valve stem on a tire but shorter.remove cap,again just like on a tire.turn key to on-push valve stem in as if to let air out if you get air,then gasoline,you have just bled the system.replace cap,start car.if you get no gas,remove gas tank cap,turn on key,listen for ""hum'' of fuel tank.no hum,check fuel pump.modern[plastic] fuel pumps will self destruct if run dry,even for a short time.

After removing filter carburator is exposed


Replace entire primer bulb assembly. You might replace hose going to it as well. Extended sunlight kills plastics.
