Seems you are attempting an upgrade install. Try to do an erase install / Format Install, most probably it will pick up the drivers on its own if not you can search for the drivers on

If you mean wiping your hard disk clean and installing Windows again then -
Installing Windows XP
This is generally how your format the hard disk and install Windows.
First you need a Windows XP installation CD and the product installation code, which is printed on the Windows label on the bottom of your laptop.
Boot up with the Windows installation CD start and follow the instructions to install Windows.
Next Delete the existing Windows partition.
Next Create a new partition.
Next format this new partition - Format the partition in NTFS not a quick format. This will prepare the Windows for a clean install.
Next create a Username and company name (normally Home is all you need).
Further into the installation, you will be required to put in the Installation code. During the final stages of installation you need to create an User or Users that will use this computer. When you finished installing Windows you need to install the laptop's device drivers. You need to use a computer with Internet access to download these drivers from the laptop manufacturer's WEB site and install these drivers on your laptop.
Next connect a LAN cable to the LAN port from your computer to your DSL or cable modem and you need to Activate the Windows installation on the Microsoft WEB site.
Next up need to upgrade Windows from the Microsoft WEB site including Service pack.

How to format r51

You can use your Windows installation CD to format the hard drive and install Windows again.
Boot up the ThinkPad with the Windows installation, follow the instructions to delete the existing partition, then create a new partition, then format the hard drive - do a full format, NOT a quick format.
You can then continue to complete the Windows installation.

Your system may have been attacked by virus. Or your memory is too small for the operating system you are using. If you were not having the problem initially, try scanning the system for Virus with a powerful antivirus software such as Norton. You may also save your important files, format the harddisk and reinstal all software. Better still, your restore the system to a date before problem started if you are using windows vista.

Operating system corrupted

Hello,
If you had bought your OS, then you would probably be having the bootable OS CD with you.
It is very simple to format your system.
Follow these steps,
1. Restart your system and go to setup by clicking the F2 key.
2. In the setup, go to boot sequence and place BOOT FROM CD at the top of the list. save changes and exit from setup.
3. Now insert the OS CD in your drive and restart the system. The system will now start from the CD.
4. This will take you to the XP setup from where you would be asked to partition the harddisk for formating the OS.
5. follow the steps given by the setup and you have your new formatted OS.
Good luck!

I need to format the laptop

If you do not have the drivers for the devices that are installed on your laptop, then download from the IBM/Lenovo WEB site, make sure they are for your model laptop (eg. Video, audio, modem LAN etc.) before you format and reinstall Windows..

Follow these steps.
1. Boot up the laptop and press F12 function key to get a list of boot devices, select the CD drive.
2. Insert your Windows XP CD into the CD drive.
3. Press the space bar to start the bootup from CD
4. During the install process you delete the existing partition/s and create a new partition.
5. The next step is to format the partition - do a NTFS full format not a quick format
6. Follow the instructions to install windows.
7. After Windows completed the installation ,check on which device drivers didn't install and install these drivers.

I have an IBM thinkpad, an old one from work, nad it has another user name and password that I do not know. Id like to format the hard drive and install Vista on this, currently it is W2000 pro. Would you...

You don't need to get a command prompt to format the hard drive.
Just boot up with the CD as the first boot device. Press F12 just after you switch on the laptop, then select the CD as the temporary boot device, insert the Windows XP install CD in the drive.
When the install process starts and displays the partitions, delete the existing partitions, then create a new partition, and then do a full NTFS format, not a quick format.
Now ou are on your way for a new Windows install.

DVD

Hi,
I don't mean to disagree with my associate, but DVD players for R series (or T, A, etc) can be found for less than 20.00 US (Ebay is a good example)
For that matter, we've got at least a dozen at our shop which we sell for 25.00
Installation is very simple as well, just pop the old drive out, put the new drive in.
Good luck
