SOURCE: prob. with aspect ratio

The key word here is dropped, was the unit ok before? how hard was it dropped? if the tv is only a 4:3 screen then it can not give you a 16:9 AR unless the dvd can change that, it probably has the main circuit board broken somewhere and it needs professional help.Let's hope is not major damage.

SOURCE: Wrong aspect ratio LCD tv: Model Polaroid FLU-1911S

You cant change the aspect ratio. Polaroid built this unit with a non-standard format. Here is what I found:

Don't be thrown off by other wide-screen aspect ratios. When shopping for wide-screen displays--especially flat-panel LCDs--you may see aspect ratios such as 15:9 or 16:10. They are, for all intents and purposes, close enough to 16:9 to be considered synonymous. Unless you're extremely sensitive to geometry, it's doubtful you'll notice the slight stretching or squashing they introduce.
Sorry!

SOURCE: LG 32'' LCD TV aspect ratio self switching

I have an LG LCD TV with the same problem.
The solution is to go to
MENU
OPTIONS
FACTORY RESET
And select HOME rather than STORE on initial setup.
Mine was set to store as it was a display model.
That means that whatever picture setting you make they will reset after 10 minutes.

SOURCE: cannot change aspect ratio

If you are connected to a HD cable or satellite box, the aspect ratio is set by that box. If it is set for 1080i 16:9 wide screen mode then your TV is locked at that ratio. This is good considering you have a Hi-Scan 1080i television in the Sony KP57HW40. Please take a moment to rate my answer. Thanks...

How do you set cable to 16:9 output?

Different channels are broadcast in different aspect ratios, depending on the network and the show(s) being broadcast. Many older show are still broadcast in the 4:3 ratio to avoid distortion. Currently, there is nothing in the broadcast signal that tells the TV what aspect ratio to use. Therefore, TV remotes have a selection button (mine says "P.SIZE") that allows the user to change the aspect ratio to optimize the viewing experience.

A simple question - My new 42" LG tv is fine -

You should be able to change the aspect ratio to fit the size of your screen. This will be the 16:9 4:3 16:10 settings.

You can access these by going to MENU---> PICTURE -----> Select ratio that works----> exit out and watch TV.

IF this will not fix it you need to look into the signals being fed to the TV as sometimes they can have a funny effect on the output picture. Some cable boxes will alter the picture and then it won't come out right on the TV. If it is all inputs doing this tho then changing just the Aspect ratio on the TV should solve the problem.

I have a 50" Plasma

Hi, the aspect ratio is set incorrectly for the source material or the screen is simply set to 4:3 aspect (old TV size) manually. There will be a menu function or an aspect button on the remote for doing this. Set it to auto which is usually good enough for most viewing though the ratio may change during adverts and back again for the film on tv watching. This can be annoying so when on tv mode observe the ratio set when the film is on and manually set this ratio, usually 16:9. The display will normally tell you the ratio setting at the point of change so you can do this. I hope this helps.

People look fat than usual on the screen on aspect ratio of 16:9

The normal aspect ratio is 4:3 for most television broadcasts. If you have the ratio at 16:9, it will stretch the frame of a 4:3 ratio broadcast and cause that to happen. That is normal. 16:9 is only meant for widescreen broadcasts or movies. Some high-definition channels will add bars to the sides of the 4:3 broadcasts to solve this issue for non-compatible frames such as commercials. I would suggest using a 4:3 ratio setting when watching those types of broadcasts.

Just called Sony about this same problem...taking your CABLE BOX remote, push the # key on the bottom right of the remote (it also says HD Zoom on mine). You can cycle through 4 or 5 zoom options...make sure you are on an HD channel to see the changes. :)

Picture not to edge of screen

That is because you are watching the picture in the 4:3 aspect ratio. This is normal when you are watching a channel that is being broadcast in 480 or digital. But once you tune to a station that has 1080 or at least 720p which is true high def then the picture should expand to 16:9 aspect ratio. It will switch between the two automatically as it determines what type of signal it sees. You can force the resolution to change by pushing the format or aspect ratio button on the remote but you will lose picture quality.
