It is not wise to leave the cartridges empty, causes permanent print-head damage on the empty color area. However, if you want to use the other color, say "black", bypassing the cartridge check is simply resetting the counter of the printer... download the utility file "sscserve.exe" you can search it on the internet. Install it then choose your printer on its list box, then by right-clicking on the printer icon of the utility at the bottom right of your window... you should be able to see what you need. microsoft logo is in colour and so its printing while everything else on test page is black so its not printing. the problem is common.you need to do automatic deep cleaning for the ink flow to start once you install new cartridges.go to printer maintanance option and click the option deep cleaning .it will pull out the ink in printer head and it will start working.sometimes also requires cleaning twice. thanks and do not forget to accept the solution.

It may need a new purge assembly, if it doesn't clean both sides properly either color or black will quit. You might try a new printhead first, QY6-0064-000 around $40.00

Typically you do not have to change the color cartridge when you replace the black cartridge.
As far as the spotty printing, it sounds like you have some clogged nozzles caused by the lower quality of ink in refilled or aftermarket cartridges. There cartridge inks may not be up to specification. This is especially true for the ultra fine printers.
To clear the problem you need to insert an OEM cartridge, run the deep nozzle cleaning utiliity at least twice followed by the alignment utility. This should clear up the problem with the spotty and washed out printout.

You need to reset the ink level before the printer can print further, to do these please follow the following step:
1) Goto the Lexmark Solution Center application.
2) Press button Maintenance>Install a new print cartridge, follow the instruction on screen. U may then have your new full ink level. Note: u only can reset to full level, cannot customize the level by your own.
Then try again with printing alignment task.
