Shaft turns while trying to remove blade on B&D MM875 elec. mower

Here's the scoop on the MM875: it has a plastic piece called a "blade insulator" (part # 241381-01) that "locks" the shaft to the blade, so that you can remove the nut by stopping or blocking the blade. If it has been damaged or stripped out, then stopping the blade won't do anything. However, the metal spacer directly under the nut IS still locked to the shaft (because of its shape), so you can use a pipe wrench or something to hold that in place and unscrew the nut. You might even be able to get someone in a home improvement store to do this for you. But you will still need to replace the insulator, which is only a few dollars.

Repalce blade on 700 series craftsman lawnmower 917.374541

Tilt the mower back in a direction that brings the front (spark plug end) of the engine up and the back of the engine down if possible. This keeps the oil from going places it doesn't need too.
Under the deck of the mower you will find the blade bolt It will be in the center if the blade and should be a hex-head bolt Around the 1/2 " size. You will need to either jam the blade where it can't turn the motor while you attempt to loosen the blade bolt or enlist a helper wearing gloves maybe to hold the dull side of the blade still (if you can't hold it yourself). For easier removal of the blade bolt the next time around, coat the threads with Permatex Anti-Seize Dry Graphite Compound. You won't have it stuck or rusted next time.

Hello. Most likely the nut which holds the blade tight has loosened enough that the motor spins the shaft but the blade just sits there and doesn't spin. This is an easy repair. You will need a large crescent wrench, or the properly sized open end wrench and a 2 foot long piece of 2x4 lumber. Use the lumber to "lock" the blade against the frame once you have the nut fairly tight. Then give it one more turn to be sure the nut doesn't loosen up on you again. It is best to do this job without turning the mower upside down as doing that will cause the oil to go into the air filter and then it will not start. If this is all basically greek to you ask a neighbor or a friend for help. It is really only a two minute job. J.

Change blade

OK first raise the cutting head. Loosen the screw that holds the guard in place and move out of the way. Find the spindle lock on the right hand side of the gearcase and turn blade by hand (UNPLUG SAW FIRST) until it locks. With the wrench supplied with saw put it on the blade bolt and turn it clockwise to loosen, it has left hand threads, remove outer flange and blade. Let me know it you need any more help
