Sir photo are printing very dark even darkness adjusted to low

It's been a long time since I worked on of these machines. I believe under the additional function option there is adjustment option for image density. This should overide current copier density settings. Sorry I can not remember exact naming.

My phaser 740 has print that flakes off when you print pictures with real dark areas. I assume it needs more fuser heat or less paper speed. The problem is I can' t figure out how to adjust either of these...

Recalibrate the colors. Flaking is sometimes caused by more ink/toner than can be fused to the media. There's a limit for the total amount of ink/toner. Yours may be set too high.
You'll need a copy of the Printer's User's Guide (also Downloadable from Xerox.com)

Controlling Color Density

When colors look faded, adjust the toner color density to extend the life of the components.

Print and use the Color Reference Page 1 In the printer's front panel, scroll to Calibrate Colors,

press Menu and print the Color Reference Page. 2 Compare the Color Reference Page to the Color Density

Samples on page 39. Make a note of the value (-10 to +10) for each color that most closely matches the samples.

3 Adjust the density for each color: Enter the value noted in Step 2 in the Calibrate Colors menu, under Adjust Each Color.

? Decrease color density: Press . ? Increase color density: Press --->.

4 Reprint the Color Reference Page; check your adjustments

4. SPC PCB is defective

there is a sensor in the drum unit that measures/sensors toner density on the drum. the sensor is usually dirty and needs a clean. there could be a number of causes so a technician needs to be called.

AR 405 copier has service code of F2-31

F2 31 Content Process control trouble (OPC base surface reflection factor is improper) Detail Usually the sensor gain is adjusted so that the output is a certain value, by reading the drum base surface with the image density sensor before starting process control. However, a certain output is not obtained by adjusting the sensor gain. Cause Image density sensor defective Check and remedy Check process control sensor output with SIM44-03. (Do not adjust) If the result is far different from the specified value, it suggests the sensor is defective. Check the sensor and harness. If the deviation is relatively small, check the sensor and drum surface for contamination.

How to change the density of the printer HP LaserJet 5p

I'm afraid this won't be of much help to the original poster, who asked the question a year ago, but anyway - others may be looking for this too, just like I did...

To change the print density, a simple command must be sent to the printer. This is done in two steps:
  1. Create a file, containing the command
  2. Send it to the printer ("copy" it to the printer, in a DOS shell)
The command is:
<ESC>%-12345X@PJL DEFAULT DENSITY=4
where <ESC> represents the "Escape" character (character code 27). There are several ways to generate the Escape character (which cannot be directly entered in a text editor): E.g. substitute the character with any other, save the command and then replace the first character with 0x1b using a hex editor.

Or:
  • Open a DOS window
  • Enter:
    copy con density.txt <Enter>
  • Hold the <Alt> key
  • type 27 on the numeric keypad
  • Release the <Alt> key - the Esc. char. is shown as ^[
  • Type the rest of the command (e.g. %-12345X@PJL DEFAULT DENSITY=4) - adjust the density value to the one you actually want to set.
  • press <Enter> <ctrl-Z> <Enter> to write the file
When you have successfully created the command file, send it to the printer. In the DOS window, enter:
copy density.txt LPT1
(assuming that your printer is connected to LPT1)

That's it!
To verify that the density has actually been set, print a printer status page.
The printer remembers this setting, so this needs to be done only once.
