SOURCE: Original setup was interrupted
press F8 key (just after BIOS screen) at the next cold reboot and you will see a DOS screen with 3 or more options. Read each of them and I think you will see one option is to resume setup. This option places the system at a safe entry point to continue the setup. Another option may read "cancel setup and restore previous system"...this one may be used if you cannot get the "resume setup" option after repeated tries.

it sounds as if you the system as you say has failed, you can use a friends copy of XP but use your product key number on the underside of your laptop. Secondly, the vista CD may be an upgrade cd but you will probably find that it will do a complete install as they are normally the same cd, just set your cd drive as first boot device and then run the cd,select new installation and not upgrade; i have an upgrade Vista cd but installed a full operating system on another partition, therefore it wasnt an upgrade but it still worked.

nothing happens when you try to use the recovery console right by pressing "r".
try this again and again , sometimes it idles but its still running, if the error appears, restat again.
some corruptions maybe beyond our control and sometimes the only solution for this is to recover the inportant files you have on that HD and do a reformat...

wow, the 90's are a calling... sure their is a roumor of a usb pen driver for win 98' ....
Windows 98, especially in it's second edition (also known as Windows 98SE), handles USB fairly well, however there are no generic/universal mass storage device drivers preinstalled in the operating system, so you will need to install some additional drivers for it. Some manufacturers do however, provide the Windows 98 drivers on CD, others have them available to download, and others simply do not have them available at all!!!!!!!
generic Windows 98SE USB mass storage device drivers:
as always good luck! now im going to go back to my windows 95 and play Bioshock on full graphics!! excuse me = )
