SOURCE: GE built in Fridge does not defrost and freezer ices up

Defrosters are commonly controlled by a primitive timer and this may have a 'dry' and a 'wet' (humid) climate setting that will cause the defroster to cycle generally every 12 or 24 hours.
If set wrong (by accident or on purpose), it can allow too much frost to accumulate before attempting to defrost.
This can cause a gradual buildup of ice.

Also the heating element for the freezer may have failed open so it never heats at all. The connections that need to be checked are often buried between the in- and outside walls.

The timer is probably still OK since you apparently aren't having a problem on the refrigerator side.

SOURCE: My LG bottom freezer, french door evaporator fan

Defrost heaters are not coming on. Check with multi meter..is it frost, or ice freezing under the fan-blades. That my friend is a blocked drain hole. Otherwise ohm out defrost heater should read 30to69 ohms of resistance. Timer may be stuck, or a hi-temp safety switch is not closing (a small disc at the top of the coils) when it comes out of defrost. Carweful with that gun, Jim! 1996 amana side by side freezer somtimes doesn't maintain temp

hello it sounds like the element is faulty, as long as the fan is working, the element switches on when defrost thermostat sensor that the coil is icy up, but if you are not familiar on how to use a multimeter it is hard to know for sure, if you do know how to use a a meter , when the coil ices up and the fan is working check to see if there is power to the element, if there is power the element is faulty, if there is no power then you have a problem with the thermostat

Westinghouse silhouette frost free 522 fridge is not cooling properly top and bottom.freezer fan is still working, and the motor at the bottom in the back of fridge stay's constantly running and has done...

The heating element, located behind the back plate of the freezer, is probably not working. A failed heating element leads to a build up of ice around the evaporator coils in the rear of the freezer. If the back plate of the freezer is removed (ONLY DO THIS WITH THE APPLIANCE UNPLUGGED FROM THE POWER SUPPLY) and there is a large build up of ice around the evaporator coils then it's a fairly good indication that the heating element is not working. The heating element comes on periodically to defrost/de-ice the evaporator coils. Heating element is often activated by a small timer switch which turns the heater on for a set time every 24 hrs or so. Heating element may be open circuit or timer switch may not be operating. Most likely to be open circuit heating element.

Frezer ices up. checked heating elm, tests OK.

Hi, If you are getting solid ice below the evaporator coil, you need to unplug the defrost drain hole/
If you are getting frost and it's plugging the evaporator, you will need to test the bi-metal switch located at the top of the evaporatr coil. If that switch tests ok and your heater is ok, you will need to change the defrost timer.
Please let me know if this helps you or if I can assist you further.

Thanks
Vic

501f freezer ices up the evaporator. After defrosting it works well until it ices up again.

Could be a couple of things. First measure the resistance of the defrost heater that is mounted on the evaporator coil in freezer compartment. Make sure to disconnect the power from freezer first. The disconnect the defrost heater and measure with ohm meter. It should measure in the 20 ohm range. If it measures as "open" replace the coil.

Next suspect is the defrost timer mounted in the front of the compressor compartment. If the heater coil is OK, I'd just replace the timer. It is tough to test.

Finally, there is a defrost termination sensor mounted on the top of the defrost heater that shuts off the defrost heater when it reaches a high temperature. If the coil tests OK, and you are going to replace the timer, you may want to replace the sensor too. It is awkward to test, the temperature of the sensor needs to be be below room temperature to close. The cost of the sensor is low enough that you may not want to replace the timer, then test the system, and then have to go back in to replace the sensor later.

My LG bottom freezer, french door evaporator fan ices up andmakes a loud buzzing sound. I have to unload the freezer and defrost with a heat gun. Lots of frost around the fan.

Sub zero refrig - ice forming inside

The solution posted previously is TOTALLY WRONG. A Sub Zero ref doesn't have a heating element in the fresh food section. Only in the Frozen food section. It has 2 totally separate systems for each section. 2 Compressors and 2 evaporators. They share a condenser. If you are having ice build up in the refrigerator then the problem you are having is a refrigerant leak in the fresh food evaporator. You need to have a certified tech come out and replace the evaporator in your refrigerator section of your Sub Zero. Not sure what you are asking about the thermostat.
