Most vehicle manufacturers recommend that you change your transmission fluid every 15,000 miles, Refer to your owners manual to tell you the service interval. If your trans fluid is slightly brown (and probably has a bit of a smell to go with it) i would recommend replacing the trans fluid, the trans filter and the trans filter o-ring (where the trans filter hooks to the valve body.)

It could be the tranny going bad but try adding a can of Seafoam Trans Tune to it. If it is a clog in the valve body then that will help clean it out.

My car skips second gear. and goes straight to 3rd. how do i fix this? is it by adding more transmission fluid?

Start by changing trans fluid and filter. Adding fluid is NOT going to change things, sounds like valve body is sticking and a good flush and trans filter might help if it hasn't done too much damage.

I have a 2000 Oldsmobile Intrique with 180,000 miles on it. I have been told that my transmission is failing, but could last up to 2 years. Also, the panel lights stay on, but not the service engine...

I've had a similar problem with my 1999 Olds. It had 202,000 miles on it when I changed the transmission fluid, filter AND added some SEAFOAM transmission conditioner to it. The results were amazing. Not sure if it was the new fluid or the SEAFOAM. Car had 248,000 when I sold it and it was running fine. Have it serviced at a place that drains the fluid (drops the pan) AND changes the filter. Lots of places offer a "transmission flush" which is when they **** out the fluid thru the trans dipstick and add new fluid. This leaves gunk in the tranny plus they don't change the filter. Should cost about $125 for a good, complete service.
Not sure why the panel lights stay on. Did you check the dimmer switch on the dashlights to make sure it is not "ON"?
Good Luck. . .

I have to rev the engine up more than usual to get the car to move in drive or reverse. Once I'm moving the car shifts out through all the gears fine. As I'm slowing down to a stop, and can feel the car...

Did you empty the torque converter also? If not you have not changed out all the fluid, now it will be diluted by old fluid. It can be a modulator but it will need to be tested by a transmission tech to know for sure.

noy sure about the hard time sifting but sounds like a vacum hose some from trans to engine may have a split in it which causes long gear change or none at all, oil brown and stinky change it its too old you should change your oil every 10 thousand

Transmission

You need to check the trans fluid level first thing. Note the color of the fluid. Brown = bad news Redish is good. If you are in the redish (hopefully you are) Then you need to get to a trans shop to get the shift solenoids checked. A good trans shop will fix this problem with out trying to sell you a rebuild. Again High miles usually will result in a rebuild and the Brown fluid. Trans needs fluid changed (EVERY 30 K ) regaurdless what anyone says. This service is around 100 dollars. (fluid and filter change) Shift Solenoid At a good shop should be no more than 150.00 parts and labor.

2000 Jaguar XJ8 Transmission is slipping how do I check the fluid and or change the fluid

Your car has no transmission dip stick, you will have to have the dealer service the trans, it requires special tools to fill trans.
