I've seen this problem on a lot of lower budget tablets, where no matter what you do the tablet won't connect. Somehow if the miss an update, then you have a firmware problem. Go on a PC and install an android update and firmware app. Choose the tablet that you have and update. Put this on your tablet when it finally connects.

Usually with 'work wifi', or any public hotspot, merely connected isn't enough. You have to open your browser and connect to a new page. It has to be something that isn't in history or cache. I favour ba.com because it is short. Accept the Terms and Conditions and click Connect. Once the page refreshes, you are connected.
At home, you are connecting to your own internet and not through a third party company like Datavalet, Boingo or similar. There is no terms and conditions to accept, so you are immediately connected.
