You can take off and hand-wash the cover of the maxi cosi.

I did this now and 10 years ago. My Maxi-Cosi now is Cabrio and it was not easy to take off. Washing by hand was easy.

What seems to be a sewn-up loop, is actually easy to unattach, but the trick is not explained in the manual.
Where the end of the strap seems to be holding to the seat's plastic shell, the plastic is not completely connected, there is a break in the plastic. Just move the strap left/right a bit and you will see that you can unattach it there. Then you can unthread the loose end of the strap and completely remove the cover.
Credits for this go to my wife who figured it out after I already thought we should return the seat to the shop. :p

SOURCE: size 0 maxi-cosi sun shade
The sun shade is already on the car seat! It comes with it! When I recieved my car seat I thought it was missing this part. It is actually pushed in behind the plastic ridge at back of car seat!! I found it kind of hard to pull out but it is def there!!!
