I can't say this is your problem but many people assume their vacuum has no suction because it will not pick up hair or lint from the carpet, when the problem is the belt is stretched and slipping and not spinning the brush roll fast enough. Replace your belt twice a year to clean carpets properly.

Why does (it) have very poor suction?

The filter can be clogged but look clean. Most models have two filters. Replace them both every few years.

What causes poor suction on model ud40270? It seems like a lot of air is blowing out the front where the filter is.

Susan:

First, remove and clean or replace all of the filters in the machine. There is an inlet filter above the dirt collection cup. and an exhaust filter at the front lower part of the top of the vacuum head. If either filter is clogged, you'll get poor suction. Also lay the machine on it's back, and check the tunnel where the dirt goes up into the machine (behind the beater bar) to see that it is not clogged.

Hi Tina. I understand how frustrating no suction can be for I have the same vacuum at home.

Dirty filters or clogs can reduce the suction. Here is a quick link to troubleshooting steps to assist you:

Vacuum hose has little suction.

There is most likely a clog in the hose. If the hose has poor suction the foot probably has poor suction as well seeing that the hose is what gives the foot assy suction.

Losing suction filter clean, hoses clear, output blower good, but very poor suction

if the blower is much stronger than the suction, you may have an air leakwhere the cover fits on tank or possibly a warped tank or cover. feel all around the unit for air being drawn in somewhere besides the hose. try it without the hose on and block the inlet for a couple seconds to see if the unit leaks air in. also replace the filter , dont try to clean it, the pores clog and reduce suction and damage motor.
