The calculator belongs to a new generation of scientific calculators that enjoy the feature called MathPrint by TI, Natural Display by Casio, and WriteView by Sharp
When the calculator is configured to work with this Display you are shown a template as you would see on a textbook. The squares are the places where you enter the numbers. For example when you press the fraction key the calculator displays a the picture of a stacked fraction with one square on either side of the horizontal fraction bar. The square where the cursor is located and blinking appear dark. You start entering the numerator there, then you use the down arrow to move to the denominator. When fraction is finished you move the square away from the fraction to the main line using the right arrow key.
I hole this solves the annoying problem of the mysterious squares.
Please read the manual to learn about this feature so that you can decide whether to take advantage of it or not.
