SOURCE: DVD player stuck in standby mode
Bad caps in the power supply is causing this. C17 (10v,470uf), C17,c14 (10v,1000uf) and C18 (10v,470uf). Replace with same capacitance values but 25 volt rating 85 C. Just fixed mine half hour ago works great.

FOr the MVDP1102 Memorex 10.2 portable DVD Player:
I had the same problem. If you open the disc door there is suppose to be a plastic arm underneath the right side of the lid which when you close the lid, with the movie disc in, this arm will press through to a switch inside the machine and that will set the player in load/play mode. Memorex did not have parts for this player, so I unscrewed the bottom and one black screw inside where the lazer light is. This will allow you to handle the bottom back side and see underneath where the screen is you will find the switch. I rigged up a pin wire and did some small drilling. I was successful, but it wasn't easy. Most times I just fail and toss. I thing my son just open the disc door too much and that's how the piece was broken.

My brother came over to "help" me and we put on the progressive scan...then no picture and you can't see the menu to change. DO NOT use the solution noted here suggesting holding the stop button - this puts on the child lock.
Open the door on the front of the unit; push the DVD button; then push and hold pause button for 5 seconds or more. And progressive scan light will turn off and your picture will reappear!
Thank goodness...I was thinking my brother would be buying a DVD player - hahaha.
