First of all, you need to identify the part to get the part number. You can find the parts list here:

Next, go to Sewing Parts Online (that's the above link -- you're there anyway -- and see if they have the part listed. Chances are, that part is used in more than one machine. If you can't find it listed, give them a call and see if they can order it for you. I can tell you from experience that if it's the needle clamp, you generally have to remove the wire thread holder and clamp as one piece, replace the clamp, then insert them both at the same time. It's quite doable, but generally requires patience.

Singer 237 needle bar clamp assembly

The link below is a link to.a YouTube video, it is one of three videos. It is for a 337 but you can follow it for your machine. Easy to understand and very clear instructions.

i would suggest you watch all three videos first and if you need to watch them again before you start to put it together.

Have new never used singer simple 3232, tension was tight n I tried to use it n locked asap hand wheel/ pedal frozen needle wont move. no thread is apparently at fault. How do I proceed?

Return it if you can, I have seen these brand new with seized needle bars before. You can try putting a drop of oil on the needle bar where it goes through the supports and gently working the handwheel until you can get it moving.

I have a singer quantum xl-1. The needle bar won't go down when any of the pictures are selected to sew, duck bear. The letters work and all the straight stitches and zigzags. Any ideas?

Hi Karen,

Looks like your machine is stuck in needle bar lock out (or basting stitch) mode. There is a small rubber pad that the top of the needle bar hits when the needle bar is locked out. If the pad is missing the bar will stay locked out.
You can manually pull down on the needle bar in regular sewing to get it going again. But it won't do the Maxi, or basting stitches until it is fixed.

good luck!

Metal boot shape piece goes inside needle bar then needle they keep falling out. Metal fell out trying to change

Would you please say what model you have? I gather that there's now a problem with your needle clamp, and it won't hold needles? Those clamps can be replaced inexpensively--you just slide the old one off and the new one on--but I could be more specific about where you can buy a replacement if you supplied the model number.

I cannot form any kind of stitch with my Fashion Mate #237. What could be the problem?

Check your needle. Make sure it is fully inserted into the needle bar clamp. Also check and clean your bobbin area and under the needle plate and around the feed dogs.

If that doesn't work for you ... get a magnifying glass and check the shuttle hook, needle plate and bobbin for burrs.

Otherwise your machine may be mis-timed and need professional cleaning and adjustments.

Can't get needle stay in the clamp ?

On the 237 there should be a very small piece of round metal that fits into the needle clamp so when it tightens it keeps the needle in the correct position, you may have lost that small piece of metal.

Neddle brakes - Out off the course when sewing large patterns

The reason of this missbehave is a destroyed plastic buffer, which is attached to the move limiter for the needle bar frame. It is quite a little delicate to open the machine's housing due to some hidden scews. Neccesary is to open it. You have to empty the accesory drawer. Then you have to remove the underside cover. The right side cover must be removed as well (take care of the screw which fixes the middle part of this. It is found from below through a small channel, just fitting a screw driver through the hole). Below the movable small table at the lower left front, there is a small turnknob for adjusting the horizontal alignment of big patterns. This knob has to be pulled out, also the round cover below it (best use a little hook and pull the cover out at its small hole seen from below). Remove the two screws directly under the movable table. Remove all screws, which are fixing the front cover from below the machine. Remove the hood which covers the needle bar just as you would like to change the light bulb). There are two scews to be removed holding the front cover. The foot presser handle has to be removed as well. Now gently pull the front cover off the machine. It might be neccesary to help moving the cover at the upper side, inserting a screw drivers blade into the gap between cover and machine frame. The cover should snap off now, if there are no forgotten screw connections left.
After the cover is released, take care of the ribbon cable, wich connects the display etc. with the electronich mainboard. the ribbon cable can be teared out carefully of the mainboard connector. Now you have clear sight onto the needle bar's mechanics. if you push the needle bar to the right, you can see, that the needle bar frame is stopped from a small metal piece, fixed with two screws. At the touch point of the frame and the metal piece, there is (or was) the plastic buffer, which is now destroyed and has the consistence of used chewing gum.
There are two choices: Either you find a spare part metal piece with good plastic buffer or you will have to improvise the buffer by handcrafting it.
After you repaired the metal piece, you will have to adjust it.
Moving the needle bar to the right, the needle bar clutch have to release the needle bar before the needle is over the point to stitch to the plate.

Remark: Due to the different length of the screws it might be a good idea to give some notes, which length belong to which hole.

Wish a good success,
