First of all, you should always connect the external harddisk using a high-speed USB (2.0 compliant) connecting cable and always use the USB ports on the back panel of your PC for this.

You can try to open this external hard-disk (shown as E drive in My Computer) by right-clicking with your mouse on the E- drive icon, then select Explore from the menu which opens.

    Also, please tell us:

    1) Whether you were previously able to connect and open this external harddisk on your computer.

    2) What type of connection you are using.

    3) Your computer hardware configuration, for example: motherboard make/model, CPU, RAM

Hope this solves your problem. Thanks.

Externe hardrive not working

Check the cable and power supply to the external drive. Has it been format for your OS? What type of interface, i.e. USB, Firewire, SATA, etc.
Goto Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager.
See if the interface for the external drive is shown and working.
Open "Computer Management Console" and select "Storage". Do you see the external drive?

Try another usb port. If your using a desktop, try the usb ports at the back of the tower. Also use a shorter usb cable. Long usb cable has the possibility that a power lose will occur. Shorter usb cables has more direct power output going to the external hardrive. Also check your usb drivers in your device manager if it has errors. Right click on My Computer icon on the desktop, then choose Properties, then go to the Device Manager tab then click on the Manage Devices button, there you can see all your hardwares if they are working fine.

It makes three noises when i plug into comp and wont show up in menu of external hardrives

When it makes noises when you plug it into your computer it means that the computer aknowledged that you plugged it in. Depending on the speed and state of its autoplay feature you may have to wait up to 5 mins for it to load depending on speed of your computer and USB hub. If it then still does not recognize by having a box pop up saying "autoplay" or a box prompting you to do things with the drive then your autoplay feature is no longer working or a file was deleted causing it to crash. Try deleting the driver for this device and then rebooting your computer and plug it in again for the first time to see if all the drivers will load, problem should then be fixed. You need to go to control panel ---->System-------->Device Manager to find the driver for the drive.

My western digital external hardrive will not appear on my computer any hints for me please.

Does it show up as a drive in the Device Manager?

You might look in Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management

Go in Disk Management along the left side...

You might have to make it into a Basic Disk ... before it gets a drive letter. Trying to remember what I just did in Vista when I got a Seagate FreeAgent external USB drive. Mine was already NTFS formatted, I would imagine yours would be too.

My computer wont read my Simpletech 500gb hardrive

SimpleTech has problems with their controller board. The HDD inside probably still works fine. You might want to get an external chassis and take the hard drive from the SimpleTech and put it into the external chassis. You will need a sata one.

I cant seem to find my portable external hardrive in "my computer" when i connect to my laptop

right click on my computer and select manage, go to disk management (under storage) and see if the drive appears here. if so it's probably trying to use a letter for drive which is already in use. If youright click on the drive you can change the drive letter to one that is free.

If not appearing as above check your system devices in device manager - it should apear under USB controller as a storage device

No usb

If your USB ports are installed correctly and enabled in BIOS, you will see Universal Bus Controller list in the the Device Manager. Double-click your USB in the Device Manager and a dialog box will appear. Click on the driver tab and update the driver. To get to Device Manager right-click on My Computer>click on Hardware>Device Manager. If your computer has a built-in USB device and does not detect the device through the Device Manager, confirm that the USB is enabled in the computers BIOS and that the BIOS supprts USB devices.

Disconnect the USB drive
Boot to Safe Mode (F8 at boot), then open device manager (Right Click MY Computer, Properties, hardware tab, devicemanager button) then find the USB Root hubs and delete them
Reboot in the normal mode, go back to device manager, usb root hubs, right click each, properties, power management tab, uncheck the check box to let windows power off the hub (On by default)
reboot, connect drive, see if it detects.
If it doesn't. open Disk Management (Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
In the console tree, click Disk Management. The Disk Management window appears)
and see if it is seen then but has a conflict with the drive letter.
If that doesn't resolve, try drive on another system.
