Hi leann brown, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box?

    1) What brand and model camera are you using?
    2) I doubt that the error message was "please PLUG OUT card", I need to know word for word exactly with it said.
    3) Do you have an SD or CF memory card installed in your camera? If you do not, the message may be telling you that since you do not have one, the camera does not have any memory to store your pictures on. If that is the case, you need to buy one and install it.

This usually happens when the wrong type of card is inserted. For example, your camera takes SD cards. If you try to use an SDHC card, the camera cannot work with it and just stalls.

Memory card error

Put off the card from your camera, then try to put on again properly and turn on your camera.
If the problem persist, take the memory card in a card reader and plug to your PC, if the PC still recognize it then the memory card still reliable. But if even the PC don't recognize it, I suggest you to buy the new card for your camera.

Hope this help and be kind to rate this answer please.

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program.

Are you just plugging the camera straight into the computer? Does it come with software to install? Try plugging the camera in while the computer is off and then turn the computer on with the camera plugged in. Otherwise get a SD memory card reader that the SD card can plug directly  into and this connects straight to the computer.
