The CD player on H&K Festival 500 does not start. The tape is fine, but that's it.

Hello Carol, so you mention, the distortion failures are from the speaker or the output of the right amplifier?
The remote control, does not bring command to open or close the CD holder
Because of the problem that the CDs do not boot, correctly, the CD laser reader might be in need of cleaning.
If you have knowledge of how to disarm the HK Festival, you can access the cleaning of the reader, with an swab with very little alcohol and clean the lens
If you do not know how to dismantle it, I suggest you take the HK to a Specialized Technical Service

El control remoto, no trae comando para abrir o cerrar la bandeja porta CD
Por el problema de que los CD no arranquen, correctamente, podr?a estar necesitando una limpieza el lector l?ser de los CD
si tienen conocimiento de como desarmar el HK Festival, pueden acceder a la limpieza del lector, con un hisopo con muy poquito alcohol y limpiar la lente
Sino tienen conocimiento de como desarmarlo, les sugiero llevar el HK, a un Servicio T?cnico Especializado
Espero logren resolver el problema

thats a lazer problem in the cd usually a cd cleaning disk will sort that problem if not a its the lazer head thats distorted best this to do it put a conversion tape to ipod or iphone and play your tunes off those devices via your tape, there only cheap to buy.

Perhaps the disk tray is not in correct position and leave some micro-switch unpressed.

Why not plug the cassette directly into the CD recorder? Are they trying to achieve some eqalization change? If not, then this should work. It's all analog at tape level.
