I don't understand what the Alexa app on my amazon fire does?

Similar to Siri. Just don't let it close to the Echo commercials on your TV. It may order a dollhouse! lol

I recently installed the amazon alexa app on my kindle fire and then it connected all my other devices. It was working until I installed a new router today. Now I can not seem to connect. Help

You likely need to reset the wi-fi connection for Alexa so that ti connects to the new router. Make sure that the IP addresses are the same from the old router to the new one. Some use a host number of 192.168.1.1 and others use 192.168.0.1. And of course, if you changed that, you need to match Alexa to the new IP range. Plus verify that the SSID and access password are the same on the new router as you used on the old one.
