I want to clarify first: You can set it into correct time but eventually it won't stay on the correct time? Have you tried exposing it to direct sunlight for a few minutes?

You should be in time keeping mode to do this. The manual say's press the "A" button for 5 seconds not 3 seconds. "A" button should be pressed until you hear 2 beeps (5 sec), if you only hear 1 beep (3 sec) don't let go of the "A" button, if you do you certainly will not be able to change the time, zone, dst, date, etc...
