How to properly adjust the drive chains to proper tension. what grade of oil is used with the drive chains. what is the proper oil level for the drive chains. this is for a john deere 240 skid steer.

make shure none of your hydrolic cylenders are extended and fill it up till you can stick you finger in there and it barley touches if you do this when cylenders are extended you will over fill it.

sounds like the valve clearences need adjusting they should be set at 0.004 thou you should be able to find an exploded view at pats small engines site.

A very common problem with the GX series with Kawasaki engines. The carburetor 'inlet needle' sticks open and fills the crankcase with fuel. When checking the oil, it can be difficult to see the gasoline and the level appears to be OK. Remove the dipstick and smell the oil, you may detect a gasoline smell. Also, drain the oil, and you may find much more fluid than you expect.
The solution on newer mowers was to install an 'in-line' shut-off valve to keep the fuel from syphoning into the carburetor. The inlet needle and seat in the carburetor is NOT replaceable, so a new carburetor is the ultimate solution, but VERY expensive. Installing and using an in-line shut-off valve is more affordable.
Also, this situation is common when machine is transported on a trailer, as the bouncing causes the needle/seat to leak. When transporting, always turn off the fuel supply to the carburetor.

My chain keeps coming loose


Properly tensioned new chains will require readjustment after a short 'break-in' period as they stretch. Some, improperly tensioned chains have long spots in them and they are difficult to properly adjust. All chains have a difficult life - even properly adjusted - properly lubricated - properly used (not abused). With a proper load (your weight) you should have about 3/4 inch play midway between the front and rear sprocket if your chain is properly adjusted. When properly adjusted and properly tightened, your chain should be checked weekly until you see no difference in the 3/4 inch. After that you should check the adjustment monthly throughout the life of the chain.

  • In this video, we show how to tension and align the chain and flywheel on a StarTrac NXT bike


  • First you see an example of a chain that is way too loose


  • To correct this loosen the flywheel bolt on both sides of the flywheel


  • Loosen the tension nut on the sprocket side of the bike and tighten the tension bolt until you get the proper deflection on the chain



    • A properly tensioned chain will have roughly 3/16" of deflection




  • Tighten the tension nut and the flywheel nut on both sides as shown in the video

  • Misaligned chains will look like they are walking from side to side where they enter and leave the sprockets



    • This can cause noise, premature wear, as well as making the chain look to be jumping from side to side during use




  • To correct this, loosen the flywheel nut on both sides of the flywheel, then loosen the tension nut and adjust the tension bolt to move the flywheel in the proper direction needed to align the chain with the flywheel sprocket, as seen in the video



    • Note: If you have already achieved proper tension of the chain, adjusting the tension nut on the opposite side from the sprocket will help to keep the same tension on the chain




  • Don't forget to check the chain tension after making an alignment adjustment

Have a 55cc Craftsman with 20" bar. Chain tension keeps increasing when operating the machine. I have repeatedly set the tension to the correct levels but the problem keeps repeating.


I would say there is inadiquate oil to the chain, make sure you are using proper chain oil, remove the bar and clean out the oil holes, check there is a good spray of oil from the end of the bar.

I would like to have a diagram of the timing comfiguration of a 2002 dodge intrepid 2.7 .....i am very interested in the timining marks for the camshafts


Hi, this engine uses plated links in the chain to match marks on the gears. See figure and installation procedure below. Let me know if you have any questions and thanks for using FixYa.

    1. Install the timing chain by performing the following procedure:
    1. Verify that the crankshaft sprocket timing mark is aligned with the mark on the oil pump housing.
    2. Place the left side primary timing chain sprocket onto the chain, while aligning the timing mark on the sprocket to the 2 plated links on the chain.
    3. Lower the chain with the left sprocket through the left cylinder head opening.
    4. Loosely position the left camshaft sprocket over the camshaft hub.
    5. Align the plated link to the crankshaft sprocket timing mark.
    6. Position the timing chain around the water pump drive sprocket.
    7. Align the right camshaft sprocket timing mark to the plated link on the timing chain and loosely position the sprocket over the camshaft hub.
    8. Verify that all the plated links are aligned to their proper timing marks.
    1. Install the left lower timing chain guide and tensioner. Torque the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
      NOTE Inspect the timing chain guide access plug O-rings before installing. Replace damaged O-rings as necessary.
    2. Install the timing chain guide access plug to the left cylinder head and torque to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
      NOTE To reset the timing chain tensioner, oil will first need to be purged from the tensioner.
    1. Purge oil from the timing chain tensioner using the following procedure:
    1. Remove the tensioner from the tensioner housing.
    2. Place the check ball end of the tensioner into the shallow end of the Tensioner Resetting Special tool 8186.
    3. Using hand pressure, slowly depress the tensioner until oil is purged from the cylinder.
    4. Reinstall the tensioner into the tensioner housing.
    1. Reset the timing chain tensioner using the following procedure:
    1. Position the cylinder plunger into the deeper side of the Tensioner Resetting special tool 8186. Apply a downward force until the tensioner is reset.

    WARNING

    Ensure that the tensioner is properly reset. The tensioner body must be bottomed against the top edge of the Tensioner Resetting Special tool 8186. Failure to properly perform the resetting procedure may cause tensioner jamming.

    1. Install the chain tensioner into the right cylinder head.
    2. At the right cylinder head, insert a 3 / 8 in. square drive extension with a breaker bar into the intake camshaft drive hub. Rotate the camshaft until the camshaft hub aligns with the camshaft sprocket and damper attaching holes. Install the sprocket attaching bolts and torque to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
    3. Turn the left camshaft by inserting a 3 / 8 in. square drive extension with a breaker bar into the intake camshaft drive hub. Rotate the camshaft until the camshaft hub aligns with the camshaft sprocket and damper attaching holes. Install the sprocket attaching bolts and torque to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
    4. If necessary, rotate the engine slightly clockwise to remove any slack in the timing chain.
    5. To arm the timing chain tensioner: Use a flat-bladed prytool to gently pry the tensioner arm towards the tensioner slightly. Then, release the tensioner arm. Verify the tensioner extends.
    6. Inspect and replace the timing chain cover gasket and oil seal.
    7. Apply a 1 / 8 in. (3mm) bead of sealer at the parting line of the oil pan and engine block.
      NOTE When installing the timing cover, guide the seal over the crankshaft to prevent damage to the seal-s lip.
    Install or connect the following:


    Timing cover and gasket and torque the M10 bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) and the M6 bolts to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm)


    Accessory drive belt tensioner pulley


    Power steering pump


    Crankshaft damper


    Crankshaft center bolt and torque the bolt to 125 ft. lbs. (170 Nm) using tool 8191


    Accessory drive belts


    Fan module and electrical wiring harness


    Upper radiator crossmember


    Negative battery cable

    Timing chain replacement


    Timing Chain and Gears REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 1.9L Engine NOTE: The following procedure requires the use of the puller tool No. J-25031 or equivalent, and timing sprocket installation tool No. J-26587 or equivalent.
    1. Remove the timing (front) cover from the engine.
    2. Lock the shoe on the automatic adjuster in fully retracted position by depressing the adjuster lock lever. NOTE: To remove the timing chain, it may be necessary to remove the camshaft sprocket. Before removing the timing chain, be sure to align the timing marks.
    3. Remove timing chain from crankshaft sprocket.
    4. Check the timing sprockets for wear or damage. If crankshaft sprocket must be replaced, remove the sprocket and the pinion gear from crankshaft using the puller tool No. J-25031 or equivalent.
    5. Check timing chain for wear or damage; replace as necessary. Measure distance "L'' (40 links) with the chain stretched with a pull of approximately 22 lbs. (98N). Standard "L'' value is 15 in. (381mm); replace chain if "L'' is greater than 15.16 in. (385mm).
    6. Remove the automatic chain adjuster-to-engine bolt and the adjuster.
    7. To check the operation of the automatic chain adjuster, push the shoe inwards, if it becomes locked, the adjuster is working properly. The adjuster assembly must be replaced if rack teeth are found to be worn excessively.
    8. To remove the chain tensioner, remove the "E'' clip and the tensioner. Check the tensioner for wear or damage; if necessary, replace it. Fig. 1: Timing chain guide and tensioner - 1.9L engine 85383285.gif

    9. Inspect the tensioner pin for wear or damage. If replacement is necessary, remove the pin from the cylinder block using a pair of locking pliers. Lubricate the NEW pin tensioner with clean engine oil. Start the pin into block, then place the tensioner over the appropriate pin. Position the E-clip onto the pin, then (using a hammer) tap it into the block until clip just clears tensioner. Check the tensioner and adjuster for freedom of rotation on the pins.
    10. Inspect the guide for wear or damage and plugged lower oil jet. If replacement or cleaning is necessary, remove the guide bolts, the guide and the oil jet. Install a new guide and upper attaching bolt. Install the lower oil jet and bolt, so that the oil port is pointed toward crankshaft.     11. Install the timing sprocket and the pinion gear (groove-side toward the front cover). Align the key groove with crankshaft key, then drive it into position using installation tool No. J-26587 or equivalent.
    12. Turn the crankshaft so that key is turned toward the cylinder head-side (No. 1 and No. 4 pistons at TDC).
    13. Install the timing chain, align the timing chain mark plate with the mark on the crankshaft timing sprocket. The side of the chain with the mark plate is on the front-side and the side of chain with the most links between mark plates is on the chain guide-side. Keep the timing chain engaged with the camshaft timing sprocket until the camshaft timing sprocket is installed on the camshaft.
    14. Install the camshaft timing sprocket so that it's marked-side faces forward and it's triangular mark aligns with the chain mark plate.
    15. Install the automatic chain adjuster.
    16. Release the lock by depressing the shoe on adjuster by hand, and check to make certain the chain is properly tensioned when the lock is released.
    17. Install the timing cover assembly.

    Need to replace chain on farm boss with 20 inch bar how do i get to sprocket to get old chain off


    Release the chain brake. Remove the nuts/bolts that hold the right hand cover over the drive end of the bar. With the cover off, the bar will slide back toward the engine and allow the chain to be removed. Note the direction of the cutting teeth! Clean the side of the engine where the bar fits to, and the small oil passages in the bar drive end that run from the large holes out to the chain groove on each edge. Also clean the entire chain groove. Fit the new chain to the sprocket, then insert the bar and work the chain onto it. Pull out on the bar until the chain fits fairly tight, then fit the cleaned cover over the drive. You may have to change the position of the chain adjustment screw a few turns to allow the adjustment 'tang' to drop into one of the large holes in the bar. Make sure the cover is fully seated, then run the fasteners down finger tight. Turn the chain adjuster screw CW until the chain pulls up to the bottom edge of the bar, but not so tight that you can't turn the chain by hand. Tighten the fasteners fully and recheck chain tension. Start the engine and run the tip of the bar near some cardboard at speed for a moment or two--proper oiling is indicated by a thin line of oil thrown onto the cardboard. Be sure to keep the chain teeth sharp and properly adjust chain tension--don't allow it to droop when cutting. Hope this helps!

    After tightening the chain, the chain becomes loose, all bolts are tight


    Make sure the bar and chain are being properly oiled, the chain is properly sharpened and adjusted just up to the bar lower edge, but not so tight that you can't turn it by hand. Check the bar's nose sprocket for free turning (with the chain off). I'm assuming that this is not one of the auto-tensioning saws. Make sure the chain adjust 'tang' has dropped into one of the large holes at the drive end of the bar before tightening. You may need to remove the bar and chain to inspect the mounting area for obstructions. Also, start the engine and observe oil oozing out of the side port where the bar fits up to. Hope this helps!

    How to adjust tension on 1420


    Loosen the bar mounting nuts, then turn the adjustment screw CW until the chain comes up to the lower bar edge, but can still be pulled by hand. Tighten the mounting nuts and recheck the chain tension. Make sure the chain is being oiled and is properly sharpened. Hope this helps!

For series LNT-2, LNT-3,EL-1, and EL-7 according to the manufacturer... "WARNING: The cutting edges on the chain are sharp. Protective gloves should be used when touching the chain. Unplug the chain saw from the power supply. Allow chain to cool. Loosen the guide bar nuts until they are finger tight. Ensure the adjusting block is in the adjustment hole in the guide bar. Turn the chain tensioning screw clockwise to increase tension. Turn the chain tensioning screw counterclockwise to decrease tension. Check for proper chain adjustment by pulling down on the chain at the bottom center of the guide bar. You should see no more than a ⅛ inch gap between the chain cutting links and the guide bar. The guide (or drive) links should not come out of the guide bar grooves. The chain should rotate freely around the guide bar. If it does not, chain tension should be decreased. When the chain is properly adjusted, tighten the guide bar nuts securely." On the M series if your chain keeps slipping off your sprocket... The Sprocket cover tab (located on the round part of the sprocket cover) isn’t inserted into the saw body tab slot. I hope this helps you!

    I have a 99 dodge intrepid that threw a rod and my father-in-law and I have been trying to time the car for a year now. We get number one piston up but the mark on the oil pump doesnt line up with the mark...


    I'm not sure what you may be "doing wrong", but here is the manufacturer procedure for aligning the timing marks.

    1. Align crankshaft sprocket timing mark to the mark on oil pump housing. NOTE: Lubricate timing chain and guides with engine oil before installation.
    2. Place left side primary chain sprocket onto the chain so that the timing mark is located in-between the two (plated) timing links.
    3. Lower the primary chain with left side sprocket through the left cylinder head opening. NOTE: The camshaft sprockets can be allowed to float on the camshaft hub during installation.
    4. Loosely position left side camshaft sprocket over camshaft hub.
    5. Align timing (plated) link to the crankshaft sprocket timing mark.
    6. Position primary chain onto water pump drive sprocket.
    7. Align right camshaft sprocket timing mark to the timing (plated) link on the timing chain and loosely position over camshaft hub.
    8. Verify that all chain timing (plated) links are properly aligned to the timing marks on all sprockets.
    9. Install left side lower chain guide and tensioner arm. Tighten attaching bolts to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.). NOTE: Inspect oil ring on chain guide access plug before installing. Replace O-ring as necessary.
    10. Install chain guide access plug to left side cylinder head. Tighten plug to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.)
    11. NOTE:
    To reset the primary timing chain tensioner, engine oil will first need to be purged from the tensioner.
    12. Purge oil from timing chain tensioner using the following procedure:
    a) Place the check ball end of tensioner into the shallow end of Special Tool 8186.
    b) Using hand pressure, slowly depress tensioner until oil is purged from tensioner.
    13. Reset timing chain tensioner using the following procedure:
    a) Position cylinder plunger into the deeper end of Special Tool 8186.
    b) Apply a downward force until tensioner is reset. NOTE: If oil was not first purged from the tensioner, use slight finger pressure to assist the center arm pin of Special Tool 8186 to unseat the tensioner's check ball. CAUTION: Ensure the tensioner is properly reset. The tensioner body must bottom against the top edge of Special Tool 8186. Failure to properly perform the resetting procedure may cause tensioner jamming.
    14. Install the reset chain tensioner into the right cylinder head.
    15. Position tensioner retaining plate and tighten bolts to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.).
    16. Starting at the right cylinder bank, insert a 3/8" square drive extension with a breaker bar into intake camshaft drive hub. Rotate camshaft until the camshaft hub aligns to the camshaft sprocket and damper attaching holes. Install the sprocket attaching bolts and tighten to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.).
    17. Turn the left side camshaft by inserting a 3/8" square drive extension with a breaker bar into intake camshaft drive hub and rotate camshaft until the sprocket attaching bolts can be installed. Tighten sprocket bolts to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.).
    18. Rotate engine slightly clockwise to remove timing chain slack, if necessary.
    19. To arm the timing chain tensioner: Use a flat bladed pry tool to gently pry tensioner arm towards the tensioner slightly. Then, release the tensioner arm. Verify the tensioner is armed (extends).
    20. Install the timing chain cover, crankshaft damper, and cylinder head covers.
    21. Install camshaft position sensor and connect electrical connector.
