Alexa says try later can't connect to server

If you echo or dot is saying this, verify you WiFi is working. You can check your wireless to see if it is connected, but most folks don't have the access.

Try to do the setup from your handheld again. It connects to dot via Bluetooth and then you set up the WiFi connwction

I got this on my handheld app once and rebooting phone fixed that.

Hope this helps, if not tell us if it is the app or the device.

I just switched to a different internet provider. Alexa says she is having trouble connecting. What should I do?

You probably need to connect to your new wireless router.

Open the Alexa app.
In the Alexa app, open the left navigation panel and then select Settings.
Select your device and then select Update Wi-Fi. If you're adding a new device to your account, select Set up a new device instead.
On your Echo device, press and hold the Action button for five seconds. The light ring changes to orange, and your mobile device connects to your Echo device. A list of available Wi-Fi networks appear in the app.
Note: The Alexa app may ask you to manually connect your device to your Echo device through your Wi-Fi settings.
Select your Wi-Fi network and enter the network password (if required). If you don't see your Wi-Fi network, scroll down and select Add a Network (for hidden networks) or Rescan.
Optional - Save your Wi-Fi password to Amazon: Any Wi-Fi passwords saved during setup automatically appear when you connect a new Alexa device to the same Wi-Fi network. The password is also remembered if you switch between saved Wi-Fi networks. For more information, go to Saving Your Wi-Fi Passwords to Amazon FAQs.
Optional - Connect to a public network: Enter any required information if you are connecting to a public network that requires a web browser to sign in, like a school or hotel. The information could be a pre-shared password, room number, or just a button to accept conditions for using the network. This information cannot be saved to Amazon. Contact the network owner for more information.
Select Connect. After your device connects to your Wi-Fi network, a confirmation message appears in the app.

I recently installed the amazon alexa app on my kindle fire and then it connected all my other devices. It was working until I installed a new router today. Now I can not seem to connect. Help

You likely need to reset the wi-fi connection for Alexa so that ti connects to the new router. Make sure that the IP addresses are the same from the old router to the new one. Some use a host number of 192.168.1.1 and others use 192.168.0.1. And of course, if you changed that, you need to match Alexa to the new IP range. Plus verify that the SSID and access password are the same on the new router as you used on the old one.

Do you need to keep0 echo dot connected to power line to work?

Yes it must be powered all the time. Amazon has
Evo - an intelligent Battery Base for 2nd Generation Echo Dot. ("Alexa" unlimited) (EVO 2 White) $35
This attaches to the Dot and plugs in to the power socket, then the power connect to the Evo unit. This allows you to use it not connected for up to 5 hours or longer on stand-by and you can easily move it from room to room without have to reconnect to the WiFi.
