SOURCE: All calls go directly to fax. Calls don't go to answering machine. I can't answer calls manually to speak with caller.

You seem to have chosen the correct answering mode which is ans/fax.Also pls check whether DRPD mode is correctly set .
It should be off in case your tel line does not have dual ring feature.

happy faxing

SOURCE: No dial tone, clicking sound

It most likely is the LIU (Line Interface Unit). or you might have it plugged in the wrong port on the fax itself. Make sure it's plugged into the LINE plug. If it's the LIU it would be cheaper to replace then calling for service. Unless it's under warranty still (usually 90 days)

SOURCE: The printer is making a gear clicking sound.

I had exactly the same problem with my OfficeJet 6110 as reported above (i.e. the scan head not knowing where the end-stop is). This is how to fix it (this method worked for me) 1) Lift up the scanner/copier hinged lid. Around the edge of the scan glass are 4 Torx screws. Undo all four screws. 2) Carefully prise the control panel faceplate off. The buttons underneath are on a single panel. Slide this to the left and lift off. 3) Jiggle the lid of the scanner to get it off the main body of the printer. 4) Locate the scan engine motor (top right corner) and remove the two motor retaining screws (one on the left of the motor, the other on the right). 5) Lift out the entire mechanism (rod, drive belt, scan head) and turn over. 6) Thoroughly clean all glass and mirrored areas of the scan head. Also clean the scan lamp on the top of the scan head. Clean the tray inside the scanner (where the scan head travels back and forth). Also clean the inside and outside of the scanner glass pane itself. 7) Refit all parts, using the technique described above, in reverse order. 8) Switch on printer. It should now work OK. Hope this helps, guys.

Fax

Are you faxing from the computer or from the control panel directly from the all-in-one? Do you have an answering machine on the same phone line as you fax? which could be interfering (picking up) before the fax machine can pick-up (called the hand-shake, as in when you hear all the funny noises and tones that go back and forth between two machines) In any even, read your manual to make sure it is set up to Tx (transmit) and Rx (receive) faxes; that feature could be off by default http://www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/695.pdf

Can't get fax machine to work. I need to enter ECM mode on the machine so I can receive faxes but on the report print out it's saying mode G3. I can send faxes but can't receive them. Please...

Doubt if you need to set up the fax with ECM ( error correction mode )...a lot of fax's come with ECM these days set to ON. Don't know why because in the majority of cases the phone lines are of good enough quality that its not necessary. However, that said; I would suggest you pick up your handset and listen to the dial tone on the phone/fax line and listen to see if you are hearing static noises...if you do then its likely you have a bad line and should report it to your phone provider.
If the line is good, then I would ask you to try and make a phone call off your fax machine(assuming it has a handset) and again listen to the sounds off the line. I would then get someone locally with a fax machine to send you a test page to see if the machine works from a different number/location.

I can fax out but I can't receive faxes.

What happens if you dial your fax number the way you make a normal voice call? Does the fax machine pick the line up? Can you hear it making electronic noises? Do you hear any static or line noise?
Try also putting a regular phone on the fax line and attempt to make voice calls to test the lin quality. Listen for static, noise, volume issues. Report problems to your telecom company if you have trouble in voice calls.

Fax machine stoped receiveing fax

First, check your fax's phone line. Put a regular phone on it and check for dial tone and line noise. If the line is dead or noisy, this will cause a problem.
You can also try dialing your fax number from another phone and see if the fax unit picks up the line and starts initiating communication. (sounds like modem noises)

Can't receive fax

Pick up the receiver and see if you hear a fax tone noise. If so then push the start button and hang up. Is this machine on a dedicated line or shared with the main phone number? Sometimes some people will pick up the receiver on their fax machine dial the fax number and wait for a tone before sending. If this is the case the machine can not recognize that is a ax. Make sure your machine is set for auto receive if it is on a dedicated line.

Gears grinding with Brother Intellifax 4100

Does it only make the noise when printing. Do you hear the noise when sending out faxes? I have heard grinding noises onlt when using poor quality toner refills, or the fuser gear and or drive gear asm is stripped. First try a known good OEM toner.
